Yes, Joe was more popular. But Frank needed the Manfredo fight to make up for lost time.

Despite having a larger fan base, Joe was relatively unknown to the U.S. public until he'd beaten Lacy.

After Lacy, Frank wanted some more U.S. exposure. In my honest opinion, I think it was embarrassing. I think it was an insult for a man of Joe's calibre, to be fighting a C level reality TV star who couldn't even win the tournament that he was involved in. Yet Joe didn't mind.

I can understand fighters fighting low level mandatories or soft tune ups if they've been out for a while etc, but to me, the Manfredo fight was a joke.
