Well, we all know Tyson was the 'top dog' in the division regardless, and had been for a few years before '88. Tyson would've beaten him earlier anyway, had Spinks not hung around for the biggest payday possible before he eventually took the fight.

Exactly, Spinks took off and run. At worst Tyson was the man from the day Spinks pulled out

Fair has nothing to do with it.

Who is literaly the best in the division has nothing to do with it.

It is a pure principle of technicality.

Spinks reneged on a contract so Tyson gets the title. Spinks sure dropped his.

But any extreme to make Dempsey look better, of course. He needs it.

Mendoza says: The question was who had tougher title defenses. Four guys you listed never fougth Johnson when he had the lineal title!

Jeff and Fitz were old as dirt. Ketchel was 160 pounds, and kncoekd Johnson down, O'brien gave Jack a draw. McVey was a teenager, Langford was but 156 pounds, and Jeanette was .500 or below with very few fights.

Mendoza says: How so. Demspey avoided Wills. This is one man, Johsnon avoided the top contenders as lineal champion like Langford, McVey, Jeaentte, GunBoat Smith, and Jeff Clarke. That is 1-2-3-4...5 men.

Mendoza says: I suppose this is the most subjective question, but I think Dempsey looks better on flim. Thanks for your replies.

    Dosnt work like that.

A champion can only loose their title in the ring or loose it by retiring. That is the acepted principle.

If you dont want to acept that then fine but you are going to have to re write the whole heavyweight lineage. You would probably have to acept the title claims of Tom Sharkey and Peter Maher for example.

So do you then accept that Bohb Fitzsimmons was already the reigning heavyweight champion when he fought Jim Corbett and that he won the title from Peter Maher?

I think you would have to in order to give Tyson the title before he beat Spinks.

It is not a matter of what I am happy with.

Do you accept Tom sharkey as a former heavyweight champion and if not why not?
