I think 40 years from now, Schmeling will have the greater legacy.

Why do you see things changing over the next 40 years?

I would have thought that the dust has well and truly settled on both their careers.

No. My problem with you is that you act like a two year old. You were banned as "combatesdeboxeo" for acting like that, people tell you that, yet you continue to act like a juvenile and blame everyone else for your behavior. Pretty narcissistic.

Ever heard the saying "If you meet a jerk in the morning, then you've met a jerk. If you meet jerks all day, YOU'RE the jerk"?

    Food for thought.

I'd guess time. If you saw a fight personally or heard about it directly from an older family member who was there at the time, it carries more weight.

40-50 years after Dempsey's era, Jack was still a legend and the reputations of everyone in that era benefited from that. 85-90 years later, look how the era gets picked apart (Dempsey included).

Louis and Schmeling suffer compared to the FOTC simply because that fight and the event are much fresher in peoples' minds. Most can't personally recall how big Joe Louis was- he retired 63 years ago- while many still can for Ali. People can read about it, but the impact isn't the same.

In another 40 years, people will calculate the 60's and 70's it as coldly as they do the earlier eras without the same emotional ties to the event.

Here is just a small sampling of his gems from the past month or so. 90 out of 100 posts that this fellow puts up are attack and insult based. I'm surprised they haven't banned him (for the second time):

    Real intelligent boy.

Took no time at all. Your childish comments come one right after another; a simple cut n paste job that took about a minute or two out of my life. Just making a case for your dismissal. Which, if I know McGrain, will probably be coming soon. And deservedly so.

    It's been real.

Why? Because Liston won't be viewed as a monster of a man in 40 years. I think Liston's legacy take a bit of a dive as time rolls on.

But Schemling's upset over Louis won't be forgotten.
