I'm not an MMA expert, but from what I've seen of Henderson in Pride and Penn in the UFC, these are two serious ATGs.

Who has been the greater fighter?

To quebecwarrior and anyone else who posts:

As I said, I'm no MMA expert, a bit of a noob to the sport, so can you please explain your choice? I'm looking for opinions on Hendo and BJ.

Henderson probably has beaten the better fighters and has also not been stopped before.

Penn I think is the more naturally talented.

With those points in mind, what would your answer to the thread question be?

They're both in my all time top 10.

Penn and Henderson proved themselves to be supreme athletes before venturing into mma. Henderson is a 2 time Olympian for Greco-Roman wrestling, while Penn is the first American born participant to win the Mundials.

Both have had success at two different weight classes. Beating Matt Hughs while moving up from a lower weight class is a significant win for Penn, and stands alone to compare with any individual Henderson has. However, Henderson seems to more accomplished overall in terms of being a two division threat.

What makes the difference on my all time list is Penn's established presence at 155. Penn is as solid a champion at 155 as Pierre at 170, and Silva at 185. Henderson has never held that kind of dominance in any weight division.

Penn is better p4p, but the gap is not wide.

Not even close Penn. Theres your answer ^. Penn beat an unbeatable Matt Hughes..people mustve forgot. And he's the greatest LW in history. Also Penn goes up at WW to fight the greatest fighters in the history of MMA, Hughes and GSP. If he were to fight good WWs, hed own them and his resume would be much more impressive.

This cant even be debated.. but go ahead have fun

As much as I like Hendo, I've got to give this to Penn. Penn just seems to be in a league of his own at 155 and is still very dangerous at 170, just ask Hughes.
Hendo has been owned by both Nogeira brothers, Anderson, and the most upsetting for me, Rampage. Arona has beaten him, also. Hendo has some great wins, but amongst his peers he's beatable, where Penn looks untouchable at his weight.

Both are 2 weight greats but I think Penn is a stronger 155 then Henderson is 185. Plus an out of shape Penn has beaten Hughes and gone to an SD with GSP. They are the 2 best 170s ever. Plus Penn went up high in weight and avoided something Evans couldn't.

Henderson. Easy pick. More consistent resume great victories in Proide(see what I did there ho-ho).
Gap is not wide. With couple of more defenses I think BJPenn takes it considering Henderson stop great performances.

    I know that.

Big Nog Armbared him twice also.

But when somebody says stopped they mean KO'd/TKO'd.

I think currently I would take Henderson. But BJ can surpass him.

No doubt. I hate the way MMA fans memories are so short. Hendo is a ****ing stud. This guy is practically one of the original fighters from the UFC and is still a live body today. Hendo's resume is stupidly deep. Penn punctuated his resume with a win vs Hughes but apart from that his resume pales into insignifance when compared with the names Hendo fought. Hendo was the only 2 weight PRIDE World champ holding the belt at welter and middleweight at the same time.
