And I mean American trainers, today?

Who are they and what makes them so good, in your opinion?

Kenny Weldon--experience, attention to fundamentals, brinksmanship

John Brown---attention to fundamentals, experience, ability to relate to fighters training in gym.

Freddy Roach---ability to see the situation through the fighter's eyes, experience, long apprenticeship under Eddie Futch, grew up in a boxing family.

I'm guessing the top contenders are Freddie Roach, Virgil Hunter, and Robert Garcia.

I'd probably still go with Roach because he works to a fighter's strengths and adds onto what already makes them effective, and game-plans very well for opponents. Pacquiao, Khan, and Cotto are all examples of this.

Garcia game-plans very well and gives great instructions in between rounds (Maidana, Mikey) but his father is probably more responsible for actually molding Mikey's fundamentals. Rios and Donaire got away from certain key aspects of their style and Robert couldn't correct it.

Virgil can probably build the best fighter from the ground up (Ward) and specializes in certain techniques (using the lead hand like Ward with Khan) but whether its bad luck or his own shortcomings he hasn't done that great for fighters looking to turn themselves around. Angulo, Khan, Fonfara, Berto all came to him right before they would run out of steam.

    roach
    abel

I can only really say these 2

Roach is in a league of his own though and has learnt from the greatest of trainers he is now passing his knoelege to a kid called marvin watch out for him he is very young and is a very keen learner. He is like a spounge taking everything from roach i say within a few years he might venture away from roach and build his career he managed to help ruslan win his first world title while roch was away

The best American trainers in boxing are:

Eduardo Garcia - created 3 world champions from scratch

Anatoly Lomachenko - created The Matrix, coached Usyk to a world championship, great amateur and Olympic coach

    Then

    Roach
    Sanchez

That doesn't change their nationality. If I live and work in Japan it doesn't suddenly make me Japanese.

I don't feel strongly about this and I've never really looked into it explicitly, but why is Freddie considered a great trainer when in interviews he admits he's basically only there to hang out with the boxer?

What credit does Roach get when he's blatantly telling you Pac makes up what Pac does, I'm just holding mitts? Was he just being cheeky or some such? Is that more the norm these days and my expectations of what a trainer is is out of date?
