tough to say, really. both men had such long post mw careers that mw can't be seen as their prime years. both also have big wins at mw. the win over hopkins at mw is a big win for jones. however, despite being behind on the cards and having to have a ko to win, toney's win over nunn can be seen as a bigger win when you consider where both nunn and hopkins were in their careers. jones is an all time favorite of mine, but considering the above and the fact that toney has a larger body of work at the division...and i'd have to give the nod to toney at mw. was he the more talented mw out of the two?? arguments on both sides...but as to who to rate higher, toney.
Toney easily. He just did so so much more than Jones at 160. Incomparable resumes there (I scored the 1st McCallum fight as a win for Toney btw).
Not even close Toney did so much more at the weight, although Jones win over Hopkins is pretty good. Toneys wins over Nunn and McCallum easily eclipse that.
Toney had the better body of work at middle, quite comfortably so, jones was a better fighter at middle though and i'd be more inclined to pick him against the past greats of the division here
titles and names is taking second prize when you take the kind of whipping Toney took from Jones. Jones was the sport's monarch while everyone else near in weight were mere titlists
Actually Michaelchewski was the champ at lhw and Jones just the number one contender :hi: Neither Jones nor Toney deserve to be called great middlweights.
Toney beat better opponents than many greats including Monzon and was 1 of the most skilled ever. Jones showed against Toney and BHOPs he could beat 2 of the greatest ever without breaking a sweat
WBOgus dont count, neither does phoney lineal title claims, neither does quiting and play acting against Rochiagani :yep
Toney because of him beating better opposition at that weight although I love both fighters.(Toney more because I have a soft spot for defensive fighters)
