I like Monzon more for some reason. Very hard to rate. Chavez fought the better guys and he started losing regardless of weight. But it is a very hard decision. both great.

Chavez ceased to be an all timer once he moved above 135.Big fan of him up until there, but the 140 Julio was one of the most overhyped fighters and had one of the most overblown reigns i've ever seen.Still very good of course, but not special like he was before.

130-135 Chavez is an interesting comparison, but Monzon had the better career as far as being a genuine monster at his best weight goes.

    Monzon easily.

King Carlos fought and beat the best of his era. Chavez was a great fighter, but he wasn't the best, despite the 90-0 record. Not to mention he was a judge's favorite. That second Randall fight never sat well with me, because he was not winning that fight (after he promised a KO), and never would have, had it not been for that lucky cut.

I have Chavez a few spots up.

Monzon has greater 'names' on his resume, but I actually think Chavez has the better resume when you consider the actual state of the fighters he beat at the time he beat them together with the fact that some of the names he beat were of a naturally bigger size than he was. Could you imagine Chavez losing to anyone (bar Whitaker and even that is questionable) if he chose to bully the lightweight division?

As far as doing a resume equivalence breakdown, I'd go something like this:

    Rodrigo Valdez - Meldrick Taylor
    Emile Griffith - Rocky Lockridge
    Nino Benvenuti - Roger Mayweather
    Jose Napoles - Edwin Rosario
Jorge Fernandez - Jose Luis Ramirez
    Bennie Briscoe - Juan Laporte
    Jean Bouttier - Mario Martinez
    Tony Mundine - Greg Haugen
    Tony Licata - Hector Camacho
    Gratien Tonna - Terrence Alli
    Tom Bogs - Tony Lopez

Chavez has a bit more fluff to his resume, with guys like Lonnie Smith, Joey Gamache, an embalmed, mummified version of Ruben Castillo, a fake Randall win, not to mention some fake draws against Miguel Angel Gonzalez and Pernell Whitaker.

He was the best from 87 to 90.

Chavez is my favorite fighter of all time, but i would probably say Monzon by a few spots.

I think it's very close resume wise. Maybe not appropriate to the question, but a tie breaker for me between the two is that I have a harder time picking the style and/or fighter who beats Monzon. I think we've seen the style and/or fighters (Taylor/Whitaker) who greatly trouble Chavez.
Having said that, I think a prime, 135 Chavez is a tougher out for Whitaker. Before I talk myself out of it, I rate Monzon higher slightly.

Chavez, by virtue of beating more tip-tier guys at or near their primes, but they both rate very highly as all-time greats.

If Monzon had chosen to move up and fight the top light heavyweights of the mid-1970s, I can't see him faring better than Chavez did at 140.

seriously though, i'm not seeing a ton of compelling points for monzon. his resume alone is not blasting him ahead of chavez

All i will say is that their careers are sooooo different it makes them very very hard to actually compare. I would accept either depending on an individuals personal turn ons. Of course for some it almost seems to be how long ago one fought :hey
