Am I missing something here? Duran and by a mile as far as i'm concerned. Duran is arguably the greatest lightweight in history. Plus notched up some quality victories at higher weights during his 30's.

Maybe. Here's why I decided to question my own list and thought maybe I didn't have Griffith high enough. I noticed I had Duran in my top ten and Griffith about fifteen spots after him. I know some of the decisions were controversial, but this guy's resume is extremely deep at first glance and I hoped there'd be some discussion of it, because I'm much less familiar with the context of Griffith's name victories. These are just the champs, members of the IBHOF and the WBHOF on his official win list-

    1. Gaspar Ortega
    2. Denny Moyer
    3. Luis Manuel Rodriguez
    4. Benny Paret
    5. Gaspar Ortega (x2)
    6. Benny Paret (x2)
    7. Ralph Dupas
    8. Denny Moyer (x2)
    9. Luis Manuel Rodriguez (x2)
    10. Dick Tiger
    11. Joey Archer
    12. Joey Archer (x2)
    13. Nino Benvenuti
    14. Dick Tiger (x2)
    15. Armando Muniz
    16. Luis Manuel Rodriguez (x3)
    17. Ralph Dupas (x2)

Leonard aside, this resume of official wins is more than comparable to Duran's, it looks like to me, at least. 17 champs and/or HOFers. He doesn't have the domination factor of Duran but he was the linear champion of the welterweight division three times and linear middleweight champion twice. CBZ recognizes him as the inaugural linear light middleweight champion even, although I'm a little bit hazy on that claim. Regardless, that's 5-6 linear title reigns. It's not domination but it's massively impressive in its own right to keep coming back. To me, it's not crazy to mention him in the same sentence and ask the question. But, nobody's really going into it enough to change my mind otherwise yet. There's been really no discussion on Griffith's merits. It's all been about Duran so far. So, it's not really even a discussion yet, like I'd hoped.

Who wasn't dirty ? Toney , Tua , Vitali Klitschko , Ken Norton , Michael Spinks , Roy Jones , Montell Griffin , Antonio Tarver , Reggie Johnson , Tony Thornton , Manny Pacquiao , Tony Tucker , Orlin Norris , Chris Byrd , Sultan Ibragimov , Jameel McCline .

Also : do you accuse Sam Langford , Ezzard Charles and "Jersey Joe" of being dirty ? cause I never read/watched anything like that about them before , but as you can see , I haven't certified them enough as clean either.

Your knowledge of the sport is as extensive as your sense of justice :yep

Actually, with all due respect here, I think it's Griffith who isn't getting much respect. It's more of a popularity contest here with Duran being the far more exciting fighter, but Griffith was, though dull to many, a brilliant technician..a certified ring mechanic, if you will, and the difference between them is far closer than has been said.

No seriously...I'm just maintaining that the difference between the two is much closer.

Honestly for me, Duran is easily top 15. Griffith does not make top 25.

I don't much care for Duran (or his fans) and he had some embarrassing moments in his career, but who takes him in terms of talent? I think his combination of skill and physical assets was almost absurd.

He is very highly regarded by almost everyone, but I think we're talking about possibly the most gifted fighter in history. I mean, it really is no exagerration to say he's Hopkins, Frazier and Louis rolled into one fighter.

So while I really should catch up on my Griffith knowledge, I have a hard time saying anything but Duran here.
