Little known fact but they met as amateurs and Gomez pasted him. He was a couple years older though.

Before he fell in love with his punching power Gomez was much more a complete fighter
Than Benitez ( Though Benitez is terribly underrated by a few on this site)
Benitez was much more a defensive wizard than complete package. Prime Gomez by a step.

You still have Benitez above Gomez? Agree about Ortiz at number 1.

It's not an unreasonable position to take. I have Gomez above Benitez myself. It is close though.

Yall are crazy Benitez has like 3 good wins his whole career.

Last 50 years I would say best puerto ricans would be

    1.Wilfredo Gomez
    2.Tito Trinidad
    3.Wilfredo Vasquez
    4.Hector Camacho
    5.Carlos DeLeon

And then Serrano and Benitez tied for 6th

And how many does Gomez have to rival them?

And Benítez has way more than "3 good wins".

Edit: sorry what? You have Carlos DeLeon over Benítez.

Trinidad is a lot closer to the Wilfredo’s than what a lot of folks think IMO. Tito has became underrated. Ortiz deserves the be the top dog even though he wasn’t nearly as exciting or beloved as Tito and Gomez. He was also really a New York fighter.

Benitez of course, better opposition and still has crazy records

    Cervantes
    Duran
    Palomino
    Hope
    Curry
    Santos
    Weston
    Shields
    Emiliano Villa
    Ranzany

(2 legends, 4 good champs, 4 top contenders) most of them in top form

    Youngest champ of all time
Yongest 3 division champ of all time

    Do you have a questions?

Whats Benitez 4th best win? Maurice Hope ..... lol come on.

Compared to Laporte or Lockridge for Gomez. He also wasnt dawing or squeaking out victories vs guys like Bruce Curry and Harold Weston. Gomez also has much much much better longevity because he was consistently defending/ challenging for titles vs Benitez who left 140 in 77 and didnt challenge for the 147 title until 80

Benitez has better top end wins but DeLeon has better longevity and a deeper resume.

Gomez lost to Lockridge. That’s one of the worst decisions in championship history. Gomez was already a spent bullet by then though so I don’t hold it against him. I do agree on your point of Benitez being life and death with Weston and Curry. Gomez destroyed everyone he beat really. I think Benitez’ 4th and 5th best wins were Hope and Ranzany. Good wins but I do agree Gomez has more depth, far better consistency and longevity. I also think the Zárate won >> any Benitez win though beating Cervantes at 17 is incredible.
