Both had very long reigns in their respective divisions.

Both moved up a division later in their careers and became two weight world champions.

    Both have pretty records.

Both have been criticised for not taking on or not being able to take on the best of opposition.

So who do you rate higher, Ricardo Lopez or Joe Calzaghe?

I don't know about THE most underrated, but he definitely doesn't get the props he should...if he had been two or three weight classes up, he would.

    Joe Calzaghe, unfortunately.

Ricardo Lopez, for all of his ability and dominant victories as a Minimumweight, can't even claim to have fought and beat one great fighter in his entire professional career. He operated in a barren wasteland and for whatever reason decided not to make the move up to Light Flyweight when Gonzalez and Carbajal were at the peak of their careers. It's hurt his overall standing in my view, he didn't live up to his potential.

Joe Calzaghe doesn't have an impressive resume either by contemporary standards, but he does hold victories over Mikkel Kessler and Bernard Hopkins, two better wins than anything on Lopez's record in my estimation.

If Lopez had been two or three weight classes above what he actually was then he wouldn't have retired undefeated. I'm confident of that.

Lopez, one of the best pure boxers ever seen. excellent skills and power. for six or seven years, you could argue that he was the best fighter in the world, period.
It doesn't take a scientist to understand why Lopez was so great.

as for Calzaghe, well, the name sounds familiar. i'm sure his nationality will give him some extra votes here at ESB

When are you thinking Lopez had a legitimate argument for being rated the best P4P fighter on the planet? Was it after his victory over Myung Sup Park or Kwang Soo Oh? Never heard of them? Me neither.

I wouldn't describe Lopez as being a pure boxer either, he was knocking out the majority of his challengers.
