If pushed then on opposition alone Calzaghe, who's resume could also have been much better which would have made it hard for the critics to have a go.
If that is the criteria you are using then I can't argue, but Calzaghe would have had much stiffer competition to deal with in fantasy match-ups at 168lbs. Lopez certainly would have "tool'd" anyone who's ever campaigned at Minimumweight, but that's really a testament to how thin the talent pool has been historically. It still makes no sense to me why he didn't make the jump. Light Flyweight was 3 pounds difference, and there was more money to be made, more challenges to face. Any ideas why it didn't happen during the 90s?
Good point: Lopez as a Minimumweight > Calzaghe as a SupermiddleWeight Head to Head no one beats Ricardo Lopez at that weight. But the same cannot be said for Calzaghe.
I already alluded to this. Would it have been terribly difficult to leave Don King and go join, I don't know, Bob Arum? Who I'm sure would have loved to have two of his fighters contesting Light Flyweight supremacy and breaking records, which Carbajal and Lopez certainly would have done by fighting one another.
As I say, Calzaghe would have tougher opposition to contend with, just as he did throughout his career in reality.
Can anyone not see where that comparison falls down though? I mean Roy Jones and James Toney compared to Ivan Calderon and Roman Gonzalez. Switch them around...do you see Lopez staying unbeaten against that opposition at 168 or Joe getting beaten by the level of opposition straweight has produced.
Thats something I agree with, but the mans skills Ricardo Lopez, was impressive, far more impressive than Calzaghe. Calzaghe was limited, he struggled vs counter punchers in Hopkins and Reid, (and Paul Mason early on), didnt show effective skills on the backfoot. Hasnt shown much skills in terms of use of range, Calzaghe is generalised as a mid range slugger/slapper. Also wasnt an effective counter puncher himself. How much of this can be said in regards to Ricardo Lopez?
Who beats Calzaghe at super-middleweight? Now compare those names to anybody outside Lopez in the minimum weight division.
You're very welcome my good friend. I'm glad you can agree with me. Ricardo Lopez is as overrated as they come. :good
The question was, who do you rate higher, not their resume or anything. Who do you rate higher p4p. Finito Lopez easily.
When you look at Head to Head, you dont look at who they beat, its how they beat. When has Calzaghe demostrated skill from far range? Ricardo Lopez showed it in his fights vs Sorjaturong, Sor Varapin, Petelo... Counter punching: When has Calzaghe showed his counter punching skills? Who was harder to hit? Calzaghe's was a mid range slugger/slapper that didnt outbox but moreso outworked his opposition. Ricardo Lopez outboxed, and finished off his oppositions more effectively than Calzaghe did.
