Simple question, for those more knowledgable than me.

Who do you rate more highly, Henry Cooper or Frank Bruno?

I have not got the greatest knowledge of cooper (just the bare bones - lost to ali twice, controversy in the first fight, lost on cuts a lot inc. ali fights, never won a world title, captured european title etc.) so I can't really choose.

Same really. I understand than Cooper was the British Champion when that really meant something. And Bruno won a world title when that didn't mean as much as it should.

I suppose this comes down to resume, so I'm hoping TFFP or someone can come and enlighten us all...

I think Bruno. Sure, he dropped Ali but Bruno hurt Tyson and Lewis. It's just the Ali story is spun a bit better. Overall, I think Bruno was a touch better.

If they'd fought I'd back Bruno to use his boxing skills and advantages in size to win.

About the same. Frank got the best management and promotion behind him. Eventually won a world title. Paper title even if it was WBC.

Cooper shocked arguably the greatest of all time with a heavy knockdown and controversy over cut gloves.
Bruno was smashed by arguably the greatest heavweight of the 80's Tyson.

Similar careers, although Bruno had more exposure.

You could argue that Bruno should never have been a champion... and that Cooper should have beaten Clay.

I mean Cooper's career a lot of the time lives off that knockdown of Ali. It's a bit of nonsense. I don't believe he was ever a world class fighter, he was a very good domestic and European champ and his resume shows that. He lost to Ingo, Folley, Ali of course as well as Paterson. All his successes were against European class fighters.

Bruno is very similar. He lost to all the world class fighters, Lewis, Tyson and Witherspoon. He did beat McCall though, I don't think I'd pick any of the guys Cooper beat over McCall confidently. And I think his efforts against a super heavyweight like Lewis was excellent, whereas its difficult to see a smaller guy like Cooper lasting 3 rounds with Lewis.

To me Bruno is quite far ahead of Henry H2H based on size and skills. On resume its pretty close.

The CUT GLOVE STORY is urban legend. There was a nick that Dundee pulled at and showed the ref. There was no interruption between rounds, no glove was changed. Its Bull.

As to the thread Cooper was 13 something stone with a weak chin and paper thin skin. Frank was 17 stone plus. He would wipe the floor with Cooper, Ingo stopped him, Patterson stopped him, Folley stopped.

    Poor fighters beat him.

About the same. If Cooper was around today he'd be a cruiserweight and if he didnt get stopped on cuts would certainly be a champ.

    Bruno :good

He was beating Bonecrusher and Witherspoon before getting tagged late in the fight.

He also beat Carl Williams who gave an aged Larry Holmes an extremely difficult fight. Carl Williams also outboxed Bert Cooper a respectable tough contender if not great.

He beat McCall to, and we all know what McCall had just done to Lenny.

Mind you McCall looked absolute shite against an old Larry Holmes.

    I go for Bruno though.

Look at the guys who beat Cooper, look how small some of em were. He got stopped with head shots, body shots, cuts the whole lot. Stopped early late Cooper didn't care. He is so over rated he makes Calzaghe , Khan and Hatton look under rated
