If Guzman stays fresh and beats a crop of Pac, JMM, Juan Diaz, then he could be considered such if Mayweather is gone.

If Mijares clears out all of the top opposition in his weight range, then he will be a candidate.

If Gamboa turns out as good as he seems, then my money is on him.

    ...........

It also is a dead certainty that it won't be Amir Khan.

cotto would be my choice. But this is the problem with boxing IMO. there really isnt and one that stand out as THE #1 BOXER. there is good boxers but no GREAT boxers on the horizon.

I would pick the young fighters now who look like they can be successful in divisions heavier than the current the division they are in.

    Donaire
    Khan
    P.Williams
    Pavlik
    Dawson

the only thing keeping dawson and williams from getting p4p status is lack of fights. if they can each get one showcase fight and do what they do best they are the stars of 2011. all each needs is a decent name, say dawson v winner jones-tito and williams v floyd. if those happen both become big stars, possible crossover for williams who seems a bit more media savvy than dawson.

Prospects and future talent never are seen as "THE #1" until they prove themselves....

If Diaz unifies 135 and then moves up and beats Hatton, I would say him. Cotto would take over next year if he beats mayweather and williams.

If he beats Mayweather he will take #1 p4p immediately. Williams on the other hand....not too sure its a close call. Depends who he has fought up until that fight. He needs a few more names on his resume
