This is a weird question, but I was comparing Lopez and Jones in a lazy way. This is each man's nadir. What it is is, I would have said that Tarver was better if you'd asked me this time last week - since then, I've watched Alvarez twice with Lopez and you could argue that Alvarez is the star of those shows.

Anyway, i'd be interested to hear what you guys think.

Alvarez was the more talented and inherently superior fighter peak for peak.He was a good tanklike fighter, though his overall career was a let down.

Tarver, decent awkward type and a hard puncher who quite quickly became a rather ordinary fighter after the Jones bouts imo, including his tepid crap with the overrated Glen Johnson. No surprises really as he was hardly young himself i guess.Beat more contenders of his day than Alvarez did though.

Yeah, that is all bang on.

Tell you what. Alvarez's footwork as a tracking fighter was absolutely outstanding. Pretty much as good as you'll see for keeping pace without putting himself in danger all that much. He was pretty good at what he did alright. It's tempting to say he landed on his feet with Lopez in part because of styles, but that's like saying Norton was lucky to be in with Ali or Williams was lucky to move up and get ahold of Kid Gav.

Tarver for me, he just beat the better fighters than Alvarez did.

I have to admit though, when i found out Alvarez wasn't Peruvian it did get a lot closer.

Beating better fighters doesn't make you a better fighter. Unless you rank Holman Williams as better than Roy Jones. What do you need to see him for?

    It´s very close...
Two good fighters, Tarver wasn´t special but he was better in my opinion.........A very good olympic fighter, very good power, decent skills, beat many contenders (Harding, Jones, Johnson, Griffin, Woods) and great fights gainst Jones (past prime yes! But Finito was past prime as well against Alvarez)........
Alvarez had a great right hand, good offensive skills, it´s close anyway......Well, it´s my opinion..

Well yes it does, beating better fighters has a whole lot to do with how good a fighter you actually are. That's why I don't rate Ricardo Lopez high, 90% of his opponents were no names. I know some people on these boards rank him in the top 50 which an utter disgrace.

Lopez is undoubtedly unquestionably the most overrated fighter of all time.

No, dominance, skills etc... play a part in how good a fighter is as well, but beating NAME fighters is #1.

 right. Lopez is overated and Tarver is better than Alvarez because of who they beat, but Jones is greater than Holman Williams because dominance and skills. I understand now.

    Williams and Jones are close.

Lopez is as overrated as they come, not even top 150 worthy.

I think you can leave Lopez out of the top 150 based upon greatness without looking a tool, nothing wrong with that.

As for this other stuff - at least you're honest, I give you that.
