Personally I think tommy burns never got a long enough chapter in the history books. He was a 5.7ft heavyweight, practically a midget in the division that was the first champion willing to fight all comers. Defended his title 12 times. He was also sick and dropped 15 pounds because of right before he got pummeled by Jack Johnson, he was a great fighter in his era and possessd a champions mentality, but he's basically only known for getting his @ss whooped by jack johnson

Sorry ,he wasn't sick for the Johnson fight in fact he said he was in the "finest shape of his life".His work outs were open to the public up until the fight!
After the fight he made no excuses. Burns weighed around the same poundage when he defended against Jem Roche . Burns and the promoter/referee Hugh D McIntosh were close friends,.if Burns had been sick he could have postponed the fight.

    ps Good Thread!

Tommy Burns is a good call.

There are so many others though, I'm afraid if I started naming some, I'd feel obliged to name some more, then some more ..

There are probably more underappreciated ones and overlooked ones than there are appreciated ones.

Leon Spinks comes to mind, usually referred to as a joke. He did fine for himself.

In recent times, I think the answer is clearly Andre Ward.

I strongly disagree, i can't stand him as a man or a fighter. He's the dirtiest fighter i can remember as his entire game is based on fouling.

You think his methods should be appreciated more?

I think people who attempt to reduce Ward to nothing more than a "dirty fighter" have missed out on an extremely talented and intelligent prizefighter. Ergo, I think he is, far and away, one of the most underappreciated boxers ever, particularly among contemporaries. He was a unique one-of-a-kind talent with a brilliant blend of skills, smarts, dedication, and heart.

Of course it's all relative but IMO his style was far too purposely dirty for him to be labelled a great fighter. I have to disagree with you there pal.

Fair enough. I expect a lot of people would likely disagree with me, which is part of the reason I do believe Ward is widely underappreciated.

I understand why you might not appreciate him as a fighter, but what is it about the man that you can’t stand?
