Nelson was excellent at times. Arguello was the MAN! He was so powerful, yet could seem somehow very classy in his approach. Boxing art.

Yeah. Looking at the title of the post again, I'd have to agree.

Arguello is obviously the greater fighter, overall.

As for who's better - overall? - again, Pound-for-Pound, Arguello is easily the more proven.

I can only imagine that I got to thinking about and focusing on a Head-to-Head between Arguello and Nelson at 126, which I don't think is a straightforward bout for either of them.

Ehhhh maybe I'm alone, cause I don't see Arguello-Nelson as that arguable head-to-head.

Arguello knocks out Nelson late - at 126 or 130.

Arguello had the bigger firepower, a more dependable chin, better offensive skills, and better stamina.

There's tiers of greats - Arguello is basically in the same tier with Chavez and Ortiz.

Nelson wasn't as good nor as great as those guys.

I'm not disputing the overall disparity in relative 'greatness' between the two, but I think you're selling Nelson short, at 126 (and 130, as well). You're probably not alone in you're thinking, however.

But, Nelson didn't exhibit many weaknesses in his prime, as far as I can tell, and was only ever stopped once in his entire career. That was at the hands of Sanchez, when Nelson was a relative novice, and he'd been giving Sanchez all he could handle, to that point.

Nelson also took Gomez's shots quite comfortably so, I'm not seeing a knockout for Arguello, here.

Add to this, that a win over a featherweight Nelson in his prime would have arguably been Arguello's best win, during his time at 126, and I think there's room for some speculation in favor of Azumah, in this one.

Gomez didnt retain nearly as much power at 126 as he had at 122 AND he was a shell of his prime self.

Arguello was a far, far bigger puncher than Gomez at 126.

    Arguello by a decent margin.
    Both brilliant though, no doubt.

This one is easy, Arguello by at least a step. This isn't a knock
on Nelson, but a testament to Arguello's greatness.

Gomez was Ring-rated Top-3 by end of '83 and, having coming off a win against the number-1 Juan Laporte, likely went into the Nelson bout as the number-1 rated Featherweight .

    Past prime? Yes.

A "shell of his prime self"? Not really.

A bigger puncher than Gomez, yes. How much bigger? Who knows?

How much more devastating of a puncher than Sanchez, was Arguello?

If last-minute replacement and relative novice Nelson can command more than just a little respect from Salvador Sanchez, then Nelson, as the finished article, is going to test Arguello at 126.

    This is no cakewalk.

I agree. Nelson is still underrated. He had some inconsistent performance at times (Martinez/Villasana 1 etc) but he still won these fights. His losses over a 13 year period were to Sanchez as a fledgling and Whitaker at 135. While his win column is definitely not as good as Alexis he would definitely be an extremely dangerous opponent for him at 126 where Alexis IMO was still on the improve. Even at 130 Nelson would be somewhat of a live dog/competitive opponent imo as i'd rate him above everyone Alexis beat there, as impressive as his record is.

Agree Arguello is above Nelson in resume and as a fighter overall.

Arguello... better wins and overall more consistent, though Nelson would be tough for him if they met best to best.
