Could happen with Mijares, infact its quite probable he will deserve it, but I doubt he'll get the nod by consensus By consensus I'll go safe with Cotto.
I'm thinking either Mayweather, Cotto or as a dark horse, Gamboa. Not because I think Gamboa is exceptionally talented, more so because I think if he can stay at 125-130, he'll do OK and has publicity behind him.
I can see Mijares steadily climbing to the top 3, if he beats Montiel and takes over the bantamweight division(which is open for grabs) then yeah, but writers will hesitantly put him at #1 because of his lack of notoriety. Ill go #1 Gamboa #2 Mijares #3 Haye
I hope this happens eventually, even if both guys end up disappointing. I can't see this fight being anything short of spectacular.
Here's what I think the ring magazine list will look like in 3 years: 1. Cotto (wins over DLH, Mayweather, Williams, 154 pound titlists) 2. Mijares (wins over Montiel, Donaire, 118 pound titlists) 3. Guzman, ready to retire (depending on what fights he gets, he might be higher.. say he beats Campbell, JMM/Casa, Pac, Diaz, and Hatton.. he could be #1) 4. Gamboa (after cleaning out 126-130) 5. Lopez (after cleaning out 122) I think Cotto will be the "universally ranked P4P #1 fighter" in three years (especially if Floyd fights him) because I don't see anyone coming up at 154 or already there who can beat Cotto other than Forrest, but he'll be way past it by the time Cotto gets to 154 anyways. However, Gamboa will be the #1 H2H fighter in the world IMO, even better than Mijares. There's one thing I worry about with Gamboa though. Currently, 126-130 is weak and he can destroy any of the champions there effortlessly, so he will not be forced to develop into a more intelligent defensive fighter and might become too arrogant, where as if he had elite level fighters to face he would see that he needs to improve and make his style more effective. I really can't see anybody at 126-130 that could be competitive with him, so I don't see him improving the same way he would improve if he had fighters like JMM, Guzman, and Pac to fight in a year or two.
It's gonna be a battle between Cotto and Pavlik. Stop dreaming Ams_t . . . WHEN did a 115 pounder even come close in being a #1 p4p fighter? Especially a guy with already 3 loses. Not even MAB and Morales could do that when they are fighting at 122 and 126.
