I don't know if either would have made good boxers but I had been wondering even before this thread how Sandy Koufax and Steve Prefontaine would have done as boxers.
Sandy Koufax Height: 6' 2", Weight: 210 lb. 1955 (19) - 1966 (30). To give you an idea how good of a pitchure he was depending on how he stood on the mound before a pitch the batter knew what pitch was coming, and they still could not hit his pitches.
Koufax's boxing career would have gotten off to a rocky start. From 1955 to 1960 Koufax would strugule. The talent would have been there but he would strugule to get wins. It is posible he could have been with the wrong manager and or trainer. He would have been over worked as well with at least 35 fights in this time frame. In 1961 Koufax hooks up with the right managment and trainer. In 1961 and 1962 he gets some key wins and moves up the rankings. By 1963 he is the most talented heavyweight in the world but the ware and tear on his body has began to take effect. He is fighting every fight in agoinozing pain in 1963 he beats Liston in 9 rounds and again in 1964 this time in 10 rounds. In 1965 Wins a very tough fight with Ali 15 round decision and beats Patterson in 8 rounds. In 1966 Koufax once again wins a tough 15 round decision. After that Koufax is forced to retire due to injuries.
Steve Prefontaine. Height: 5'9" Weight: 139. The quote on my avatar is from Steve Prefontaine or Pre. Pre would have been a Gatti type boxer his running style was get out in front as soon as he could and keep the lead. Saidly his career and life was cut short. His pro boxing career would have been from 1970 (19) - 1975 (24). He would have been a highly ratted amature boxer and everyone would have sugusted that he wait till after the 1972 Olympics to turn pro, but Prefontaine would have been unhappy with how amature boxers were being treated and would turn pro in 1970. He would quickly move up the light welterweight ranks and in 1972 he would recive a shot against Antonio Cervantes. Pre would set a hellish pace from the begining and look very good taking an early leed. However his enexperance would get to him and Cervantes would take the fight over. It would be a gruling battle for champion and chalenger alike but in the end Cervantes would retain his chmpionship. Pre would beat other contenders entell hs death in a car acadent in 1975 but would never get a rematch with Cervantes.
