Peak Jack Sharkey from Maloney 6 to Carnera 1, against the following; Lennox Lewis Tyson Fury Anthony Joshua Daniel Dubois He probably loses to all, but who do you think he performs the best against?
Difficult to say. Jack could blow hot and cold. He was in the ring with some horrific hitters and class fighters though. Jack Dempsey, George Godfrey, Harry Wills at the end of his career, and Max Schmeling, managing to score a win over the latter three. He outpointed the likes of Young Stribling or KO Christner, and managed to pinpoint the Philly Phantom in 3 rounds. That on top of schooling a greener Carnera. If it doesn't seem as bizzare as it may seem in one's imagination, it's because it was the size difference between e.g Andy Ruiz and Anthony Joshua, except in the conditioning focused, fifteen rounds era Sharkey carried noticeably less bulk and lard, focusing on accuracy, functional strength, gast tank, and freedom of movement. EDIT: 5 minutes in Sharkey floors Primo with a fantastic leaping left hook.
And off-topic: Carnera-Uzcudun is a great sideline view of how the likes of Mike Tyson and Joe Frazier would look next to a 6'6" fighter. He is 5,10". This content is protected
Beats Dubois, Joshua and Fury but with more difficulty. Loses to Lewis. Godfrey, Wills and Schmeling had 175 knockouts between them and they couldn't pin him down in 42 combined rounds against him. Dempsey only knocked him out when Sharkey had his head turned to the referee and Sharkey had already copped numerous body and head blows by then. His chin and defense dwindled with his eventual lack of conditioning but an in shape Sharkey was an extremely difficult guy to get rid off. Dubois and Joshua don't have the savvy to deal with Jack, and Fury himself is too hittable. Lewis has the mix of power, skill and experience to keep Sharkey hurt and backing away or just knock him out outright if he gets him in trouble.
Hands down the best looking fight footage pre 1960 is from Sharkey v Carnera 1. I could not believe my eyes when I found this short reel. https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detai...-mountain-topples-jack-news-footage/579782566
that was crystal clear. Great find thanks. I think Fury is his toughest opponent of the guys listed. Lewis didn’t face many movers and lighter guys that did move usually lasted with him, like Holyfield 2x, Marovic, and even an old Ocasio. Sharkey would probably beat the version of Joshua we saw the other night. And he would trouble Dubois and maybe UD him, since Usyk stopped him.
The Joshua from the other night was probably worse than Carnera, his rear uppercuts would make Gentleman Jim proud
My view: Lennox Lewis= Jack Sharkey loses by KO. Tyson Fury= Jack Sharkey loses by Decision or late KO. Anthony Joshua= Jack Sharkey probably would lose by Decision, but could win sometimes with multiple tries. Daniel Dubois= Jack Sharkey wins by Decision most times, but could lose sometimes with multiple tries.
