Ok So Jermain Taylor was just a stylistic nightmare for Hopkins I guess? What does Jermain do that Kelly can't that enable him to beat Hopkins twice????
He didn't beat Hopkins twice though, and the fight would obviously be at 175, 168 at best He also isn't as sloppy, Pavlik is a counter punchers wet dream.
I would say he was given a gift and the other fight was a draw - can't remember which way round....... A fast moving counter puncher with decent stamina and beard would beat Pavlik. Calzaghe anyone :think
At this point i dont think he beats any sorry, love pavlik at the mo and he has looked devastating against some of his recent opponenents, however he hasnt fought anyone on calzaghes or hopkins level so far, and i even think kessler could outslug him if it came down to a war, kessler seems to have a better arsenal, pav looked great against locket and threw all sorts of shots etc, but locket was as mobile as a dead dog , pav was in no danger of any clever counters coming his way , and he was definately open to some
The only thing that would concern me if I were in Calzaghe's camp would be the right hand of Pavlik - as Joe eats that one all night long.
Kels has shown that he has some bounce to his step and doesn't fight as flat footed as he used to. He's able to take whole steps back and use his guard and his reach to keep his oppenent at bay. Kels also has show improvements in his defense and his hand speed ... His chin is granite ... he's been hit flush by powerful fighters ... I truely think that Pavlik hasn't shown his whole skill set and given that he's still in the begining of his elite fighter development --
Its funny that were lowered to the level of Kelly Pavlik when discussing 160/8 pound fighters. Roy Jones and Nigel Benn seem so long ago nowadays.
Not exactly granite IMO - having been decked and taken to the brink by Jermain Taylor, not exactly a huge puncher, is he? That said, the first three sessions of that fight left me in no doubt as to his heart and bottle, and the chin wouldn't be that much of a factor against Calzaghe, I wouldn't think. It would need to be against Hopkins and Kessler though, bigger hitters.
You'll see once the young American super middleweight prospects raise up to title contention. Andre Ward is on the verge of being ranked top 10 already by the WBC and i'm sure a two more victories would put him in title contention ... possibly a fight for a regional belt or a title eliminator -- I'm not saying that Western Europeans, Africans, or Asians aren't good fighters but they're not as skilled as North American, Mexican, and Eastern European fighters.
His chin is nothing like granite. He's been wobbled quite a few times, not just Taylor His chin is somewhere in the good to solid range. Granite, certainly not :-(
75-0 75KO only means one thing and thats that you can't box very well and you depend on your power ... i'm sure that a person with that kinda record is asking to get outboxed.
I would say his chin is similar to that of Joe Calzaghe - capable of taking bombs but also prone to a flash KD or good shot
You taunt an elite fighter (a champion for that matter) and stick your chin out ... I don't care if you don't have any KO's on your resume ... you hit a guy flush like that - you're going to hurt him. Add to that ... he recovered ... came on strong and turn the tables. Calzaghe has been on ***** street more than Kels has ... Hopkins doesn't have the endurance that a young Kels has ... Kessler is too stiff and has a questionable chin ...
