The whole division has got that transitional feel to it, In a couple of years pavlik might be out of the picture if a good group of fighters blossom.
His chin is NOT as good Calzaghe's, no chance. Calzaghe has taken shots from quality 168 fighters for a start. Calzaghe has NEVER been hurt like Pavlik. Flash knockdowns, or even somewhat stunned yes, but never on ***** street
Calzaghe was knocked down against Hopkins and Mitchell ... and he was hurt against Mitchell he ran the risk of getting knocked out fighting back the way he did against Mitchell.
He's never been jelly legged like Pavlik. I've watched every Calzaghe fight, I never saw him like that. This is in a longer career too.
I would say that Pavs heart and determination makes up for anything short of a granite chin but JC isn't exactly lacking in those areas either.
Pavlik was one accurate shot away from being TKO'd in the second against Taylor, and this debate will never have occured! Instead Taylor threw some wild bombs and allowed KP time to recover. In contrast, Calzaghe has been down a few times (3 i think) but has never been on ***** street or ready to be taken out.
Pavlik's recovery skills are more impressive than his chin, by far. He has great heart and the natural ability to think clearly and not panic when hurt. His chin is nothing extraordinary, he's been hurt several times, and he's hardly been fighting Julian Jackson.
Agree totally, he's not the second coming, he's just good enough and skilled enough to beat all three at this point in their careers.
i think all three would beat pavlik.i do like pavlik but these 3 are probably too experienced for him. kessler pavlik would be the most intresting.get that on
His comp has been **** poor ... he has a bunch of wins over complete bums and the wins over better guys (still near bums) were usually after they had already starting losing before being selected to fight Kessler ... his best two wins are Mundine and Andrade .. reviewing his opp's records of their fights just prior to fighting Kessler makes his record look all the more questionable and unimpressive ... a Valuev-like record
I voted for none of the three. Mikkel Kessler does what Pavlik does but better. Bernard Hopkins would spoil everything Pavlik has to offer, and instead of being able to adapt, Pavlik would lose a lopsided decision. Joe Calzaghe would outbox Pavlik with his superior handspeed and equal workrate.
Pavlik/Kessler is one of the most interesting fights that could be made next year. I have often refered to Kessler as "The Robo-Dane" but that's mostly because the Calzaghe crowd over-rates him by miles. Kessler is very much a stand-up, orthodox boxer. He has very solid fundamentals including a crisp, reasonably fast jab, and a very good right hand. He has a decent chin, respectable foot work, et. Kelly's best wins ARE NOT over orthodox boxers. Kessler is the bigger man, but Pavlik has a clear height and reach advantage. Given the shoulder width of the two combatants it is very likely that the actual arm length difference is very pronounced in favor of Pavlik. In addition no one will deny that Pavlik's brute strength is pretty impressive. Kessler's hand speed is good, but many posters over-rate it. Go watch Calzaghe/Kessler and Pavlik/Taylor II back to back. Taylor is just as fast as Kessler, and JT's hand speed was not enough to get him past Pavlik. Kessler probably has better defense than anyone Kelly has faced. If he wants to land those right hand bombs, he'll have to use significant body punching in the early rounds to wear Kessler out. However, even though Calzaghe, who is not a big puncher, hurt Kessler with a body shot, I do not think he is particularly susceptible to them. On the other hand, Kelly's body punching is generally under-rated. He head hunts when head hunting is working for him. He has stopped at least one opponent cold with a left hook to the body, and, say what you will about Bronco McKart, but the man is double tough and Kelly put him on his hands and knees gasping for air with a single lead right to the body. In the second Taylor fight Pav basically sealed the deal with a body shot in the 11th round. Kessler is probably the best counter-puncher Pavlik has faced, but as long as Kelly keeps the jab working, and doesn't get lazy with it, he'll minimize the counter punching opportunities. Does Kessler hit harder than Miranda or Zuniga? ( Don't jump all over Zuniga. To this day Kelly still says Zuniga hits harder than anyone he's faced.) Kelly has dealt with bigger punchers than Kessler, but they were not as accurate. Kelly has a good chin, but Kessler has a good right hand, so part of Kelly's preparation for this fight ought to include lots of practice at picking shots off with his gloves like he likes to do. He will need to be sharper than ever. The above is just part of the reason I said this fight ain't about skill. I think the two are fairly equal. Each has his own strengths and advantages. This one would come down to whether or not Kessler can handle a guy who is going to hit him REALLY hard REALLY often and make him work every second of every round. I do not think he can.
