Inspired by the Marciano v Ruddock thread.

To the people that consistently claim that Marciano beats pretty much every single person that he's ever been matched up with, who are the people that you DON'T favour Marciano to beat in a fantasy H2H matchup? I ask because I've never seen the unconditionally pro Marciano folks namedrop someone they think could defeat him.

Who are the people that you think beat Rocky, and why do you think they beat him? Please provide a detailed explanation on why they could beat Rocky Marciano, don't just list names.

I favour him against a good chunk of people below 200 pounds, but I can't pick him against elite modern sized heavyweights. It's too much of an unknown

Look, the greatness of a fighter is determined by what as accomplished in his own era, which makes Marciano one of the best to ever do it, period.

That not withstanding, I am realistic, a lot of bigger fighters would have beat him. I will defiantly repeat again and again-- a fighter with two-fisted power and stamina to throw 95 punches in the 15th is going to beat A LOT of significantly bigger guys, but no, I would not favor him against guys like Foreman or Lewis.

He'd make a good cruiser these days.

Oh good, a thread created out of spite for Marciano, have never seen that before. Only reason this was made is to crudely diss and belittle a great fighter by matching him up against other far larger fellow greats he has no reasonable chance of beating, just because some fanboys were overhyping him on the internet.

    Chuck Wepner

why ? Because he was the man who retired Sonny Liston, thrashed Ernie Terrell, Schooled a green Foreman, forced Randy Neuman into refereeing and laid out Muhammad Ali, and reminded Joe Bugner that HUNGRY was the country he was really from and not just a state of feeling.. no way is Marciano beating a guy like that. There is no greater wonder on this earth than the almighty Bayonne Bleeder..

I mean he was way too small for modern Heavyweight but he would probably do well in Cruiserweight or Light heavyweight

Why're you being so defensive? I'm genuinely curious as to who the Marciano Uber Alles crowd thinks can beat him. Snarkiness isn't really usually my thing, nor is passive aggressiveness. I'd never waste mine or anyone elses time creating a rhetorical insult thread for a fighter I have no negative emotions towards lol.

    Great post.

Wepner doesn’t get enough respect these days.

I don't think this was made out of spite at all. But if it was it seems more like it's directed at Marciano fans than Marciano himself.

The context for the creation of the thread was the Rocky vs Ruddock thread. Apparently a 30-40+ pound difference means nothing when two aggressive hard hitting guys stand in ring center slugging it out. Apparently someone should still be regarded as having an iron chin even if they never fought punchers significantly heavier than them.

If someone made a thread of Hagler, Canelo, Andre Ward, etc vs Rocky you find plenty of Rocky fans saying they're way too small and lack the power/toughness to keep up with him. But some of those same posters will just ignore a huge weight difference between Rocky and modern heavies. So this thread is trying to figure out why some (not all) Rocky fans can be so inconsistent with their criteria/standards in h2h discussions. Apparently the guy has no weaknesses, no bad style matchups, won't get KOd no matter how big and powerful the opponent, etc.

I think he might beat anyone in his weight range. But yeah, there are loads of big guys most folks wouldn't pick him to beat. Just put a Lennox Lewis vs Rocky Marciano poll up, the forum will vote for Lewis, like they always vote for Liston, for example.

As for why some people pick him, he's an all-time great fighter who is enormously popular. Why do you need a roadmap for help with that?
