I put together the article below after the farce that was Williams-Platov, where Öner clearly broke the rules on more than one occasion, ringing the bell early when his fighter was on the verge of getting stopped, then throwing the towel in, which promoters are not allowed to do.

British Heavyweight champion Danny Williams beat German-based Kazakh Konstantin Airich in Bilbao, Spain 30/05/08. The result was given as a TKO after Airich’s promoter, Ahmet Öner threw in the towel during the 7th round. This ended what was an entertaining fight in many ways, but what will ultimately be remembered as a complete farce due to both the bias the referee showed against Williams, and the flagrant rule-breaking by Öner himself.

The referee took a total of three points off Williams during the fight – Two for a single low blow when he had only be given one warning, and one for hitting after the break, which was highly dubious. In addition to this, he was given the count on three occasions, NONE of which were legitimate knockdowns – All were slips.

Apart from breaking the rules by throwing in the towel (only the referee is allowed to stop the fight, plus the promoter is not in the fighter’s corner, so has absolutely no right trying to stop the fight), the main reason Öner came under so much criticism is because he broke the rules in an even more brazen way – By ringing the bell to end round six with 1.41 still due to go in the round, at a time when Airich was in imminent danger of being knocked out. There is absolutely no justification for this, and this action, plus his role as promoter of this absolute farce leads me to one word which I’ll repeat throughout this article. Öner was ACCOUNTABLE for what happened, and as a consequence, should not be allowed to promote again, in my humble opinion…

Williams rightly complained after the fight, which has led the British Boxing Board Of Control to launch an investigation into what happened. Öner posted a statement which was posted on East Side Boxing shortly after the bout which had the gall to place the blame on seemingly everyone involved in the fight but himself.

Disgraceful doesn’t even come close as a word!

I’d like to look at Öner’s statement in some detail.

“First of all I want to apologize for all the confusion in this fight. And I want to point out that I never meant to cheat on Danny in any way. If it would have been my goal to steal the victory from him I wouldn’t have thrown in the towel at a point where Konstantin was leading on all scorecards.”

OK – This the first and only time Öner apologises for what happened in Bilbao. Straight away he tries to deny the point on everyone’s lips. Note the dig at Williams at saying the Airich was ahead at the scorecards. This is only because of the joke of a referee’s antics resulting in Williams being penalized six points, arguably at least five of which were unjustified - (it’s arguable that the referee was just in taking a single point for low blows when he did – taking two was far too severe, as it didn’t appear to be intentional or a flagrant breaking of the rules) – otherwise the fight would have been pretty much even with Williams very much in the ascendancy.

“The main problem of the fight, however, was very poor refereeing and the officials of the local commission.

Regarding this I want to make clear that the show was only co-promoted by ARENA and we didn’t bring German officials to Spain but worked with the local commission in Bilbao.”

Here is the first instance that I’ll use the word ACCOUNTABLE. In my mind it’s a simple as this - If you’re promoting a fight, you’re accountable for the promotion. It’s all well & good taking the glory for when things go well, but you simply can’t try & pass the buck when they don’t.

“I didn’t know anybody of the officials before the fight and to me they really turned this great bout into a farce.”

Again, Ahmet, you can’t just pass the buck. You sir, are accountable.

“The referee was at no point in control of the action inside the ring.”

    That, Ahmet, is YOUR problem.

“The supervisor did nothing to correct the referee and what the timekeepers did was the biggest disgrace. They stopped the breaks prematurely and had one round – I think it was the 5th – going for 3:30”

This comment, more than any others Öner makes, is utterly reprehensible given what he himself did in the sixth round. The sheer audacity the man has in criticizing the timekeepers when he broke the rules to protect his fight from being knocked out is staggering to me. He even tries to justify that next…

“Because the fight was very exciting but disturbed by poor refereeing I got very angry and started to argue with the officials. Additionally I had heard after the 3rd round that Konstantin had problems with his left hand and seemed to be seriously injured. So when Danny started to attack Konstantin in the 6th I shouted at the officials to stop the fight. Actually Konstantin’s trainer didn’t think that his fighter was in danger so he didn’t throw in the towel what would have been the best at this point of time. I thought Konstantin might get knocked out hard as I know that Danny can do some damage. So I kept on shouting ‘Stop the fight!’ and meant that it should have been a tko for Danny at this point. This situation led to the ringing of the bell with 1:30 to go in the round. “

Note ‘the ringing of the bell’ rather than ‘I rang the bell’. Taking this remark at face value (which is pretty hard to do), Öner claims he wanted the bout stopping & the fighter he was promoting to be saved from further punishment. That’s reasonably understandable in principle, but there’s three major problems with it:

    1. The promoter has ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT interfering with the bout in this way. Ringing the bell to end the round early is a serious breach of the rules
    2. If Öner was really that concerned about Airich, why didn’t he throw in the towel, as opposed to ringing the bell to end the round early at a point where his fighter was on the verge of being knocked out? It seems he was caring less for Airich’s safety and more for giving his fighter a chance to recover & his shamefully biased promotion to continue
    3. This is the killer – If he was really that concerned, then why did he allow the fight to continue & for Airich to go out for another round, only throwing the towel in (which, as I pointed out earlier is breaking the rules as a promoter) after around a whole minute had elapsed?

“We went to neutral soil which proved to be a mistake as this local commission really did a bad job. I think the first half of the fight showed that it was a good match-up. That this was ruined by poor refereeing teaches me not to work with inexperienced referees and officials again.”

Small point, but before, Öner claimed that his company ARENA was only co-promoting the event? I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – You’re accountable.

“I hope that Danny understands my motives and what happened in Bilbao.”

Ahmet. I believe your motives are crystal clear, and not only Danny Williams, but anyone else who saw that fight can understand them loud & clear…

“After all I hope that Danny gives Konstantin a rematch one day after he recovers from his broken hand because I think Konstantin deserves it as he really showed a hack of a fight which shouldn’t be forgotten besides all the anger and confusion.”

As a final insult, Öner even has the cheek to ask for a rematch.

Ahmet Öner is responsible for the farce that was the bout in Bilbao, plain & simple. That he tried to shift the blame onto others is not acceptable. Moaning about incompetence from others is all well & good but at the end of the day, he was accountable. That he compounded that accountability by breaking the rules twice (one occasion of which was clearly showing his bias is unforgivable.

Now he's at it again, nigh on physically assaulting the judges at the Sam-Vidoz fight, then having the GALL to say 'We will not accept this!' after the decision was announced as a draw in a close fight which he was desperately trying to engineer for his fighter to win!

    :verysad

This man should be banned from promoting & banned from any involvement in the sport whatsoever - Who's with me?
