I think it was Gene Ace Armstrong who for good reason was highly regarded in the late '50s, early '60s. He had some very, very good wins against tough guys like Randy Sandy, Rory Calhoun, Italo Scotirchini, Rudy Ellis, Henry Hank, and Charley Joseph, but decided to give it up when couldn't get by the elite of the elite, namely Dick Tiger (3x!) and Luis Rodriguez. As a matter of fact, those were the only two fighters who were able to defeat him as a pro.

Armstrong was a good-looking boxer who could mix it up as well. He had a very good winning performance vs. Hank in an exciting fight. His career was undermined by stretches of inactivity (I've heard the reason for this, but forgot it) & his management's inexplicable decision to put him in w/ Tiger three freakin times in a relatively short span. By the time of his final fight vs. Luis, he looked like he was already a shot fighter.
