Excellent point it seemed that Patterson's fights with Johansson and Liston always seemed to overshadow expectations and yet he fought alot of strong heavyweights and it never happened again....too bad he didn't fight Frazier. But 1st rd blowouts given his entire record? maybe Foreman but I dont see George having the boxing skills to set it up like Liston did but Tyson did and could...Lewis and Wlad K could but they are slower starters but Tommy Morrison was a fast starter and could
Basically every certified big hitter in the HW division. They also put can crusher Liston out in 1 as well.
An explosive puncher who was a fast starter would have the best chance. Mike Tyson immediately comes to mind. Dempsey is another. Had there not been the confusion over when the starting bell actually rang, Jack likely would have stopped Willard (who had never even been floored before) in the first round. Joe Louis and a young George Foreman would stand a good chance as well.
I don't see Holmes taking Floyd out in one.Larry was never a huge puncher,a good one ,but not top drawer imo.
Marvis Frazier was never in Patterson's class. His power was never in the same ball park as Johansen or Liston, and he wasn't a guy who went for the early knockout generally. Tyson perhaps, but Cooney never stopped anybody ranked in the top ten. Just because Liston did it, it doesn't mean that anybody with a bit of power could do it.
This is what happens when fighters make something very difficult look very easy. Patterson just never got the full respect especially since he frequently got off the floor to win a fight or give it a good go. Post Liston he had career wins over Bonavena, Machen, Chuvalo, Cooper, Daniels and what should have been a win over Quarry (first fight) and a win over Ellis.
