Terrell, Spencer, Ellis, Martin, Patterson, Bonavena, Mildenberger, Quarry, competed in that tournament. Should others have been included? Frazier refused, but how about Liston, or maybe even Machen? Any others?
Liston would have been interesting. Not sure how much he had left at that point. A third match with Floyd would have been a sonny victory imo. Would have liked to see him against quarry, a fight he may have won on cuts. Terrell would have out pointed him I think. Mildenberg I see getting stopped after been in front. Oscar I'm not sure of but he may have just nicked a point s win.
I think Machen was more or less shot. Liston would have had a very good chance at winning. He scored eleven straight KO's between 1966 and 1968 over moderate opposition. How far gone he was in 1967 is somewhat subjective. I don't see any of the other participants as being so good that even an old Liston couldn't handle them. I wonder how Zora Folley would have done? I don't think he could have gone all the way, but he might have pulled an upset or two.
Chuvalo had signed to fight Joe in the summer of 67 so he was out. Liston post Ali was slowly coming back with his European tour and I don't think had fought Henry Clark yet IMO his only notable win in his comeback. Plus after Ali 2 I don't think they wanted to touch him until he proved himself. Machen was shot at that point having mental issues and Folley just got dusted in March of 67 by Ali and he was well past it. Williams had a bullet in him. I've said this before but, for the life of me, I can't understand all the hoopla about Spencer. Look at his record pre-tourney. Hardly anything to write home about. They had to fill out the participants I guess but many had him a dark horse favorite which blows my mind. Yes, he beat an aging Terrell but never won another fight after that. Leotis stepped in as a last minute replacement but I always considered him the real deal despite his resume coming in. His fight with Ellis was interesting. I don't know why he kept going to the body against Jimmy with little or no 'head hunting'. If you've seen that fight he seemed to be coming on at the end until the nose-mouth cuts stopped the proceedings. Nice interesting thread! The only one I can think of that may have warranted consideration would have been Henry Cooper. That's as far as my limited mind can take me at this point.
