Roy was caught by a decent shot against Del Valle, but his back foot also slipped hard on the wet canvas, that the referee had to wipe with a towel on 2-3 occasions.

He did not struggle down the stretch.

He didn't have the chin to beat the best LHW's of today? And it's a given that they'd have gotten the opportunity to have landed the perfect shot to have taken him out?

He didn't get old overnight?

When he fought Tarver, he was 35 years old. He'd had 50 fights. He'd fought across 5 divisions, that included dropping back from HW in only a few months.

How did Tarver fare against Hopkins when he dropped back to LHW after playing a role in Rocky?

How did Chris Byrd fare when he dropped back to LHW to face Shaun George?

How did Chad Dawson fare when he dropped back to SMW to face Ward?

Those guys were never the same after.

Roy's attributes were based around his incredible athleticism which he heavily relied upon. To stick around into his late 30's and beyond, he had to adapt. Sadly, he didn't. But that doesn't take away from what he was when he was at his best.

He legitimately beat Tarver in the first fight, despite being absolutely exhausted due to the weight loss. So there is nothing to suggest that he couldn't have beaten Tarver or Johnson had he have fought them earlier.

 

Reggie Johnson was another level to Jack, Fonfara and Barrera so was Hill really !

 

Roy made no efforts to fight more than just DM. You are out of your element here I sat and watched Jones talk for 10 years on HBO about how he was going to make all these big fights and not one single one happened. Better question is why Jones all the sudden became a world traveler once he started getting knocked out? Why couldn't he travel a few times in his career? Hagler went over to the UK and lifted Minter's belt. Ali traveled to fight. But Jones was too good to travel? LOL. Beat it meth mouth.

Roy wouldn't go to Germany to face Dariusz. And how could anybody objectively criticise him for that, when he'd been robbed in the Olympics, and he'd seen Dariusz feign injury to get Rocchigiani disqualified in their first fight?

Dariusz also had zero interest in going to the U.S. to fight.

He fought Tarver at 35, after 50 fights.

This thread is looking hypothetically at the BEST version of Roy who fought at LHW.

You'll ignore the guys he beat, and the manner in which he beat them, to focus on who he didn't fight, and who he fought late in his LHW career after dropping back from HW.

Also, if Roy had beaten Dariusz, you and Rico would more than likely have dismissed the win, questioning who Dariusz had fought etc.

Roy Jones jr. would probably beat all of them including Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev.

He was really special, i would favor the best version of Roy Jones jr. over Andre Ward or Sergey Kovalev any day.
