That's reasonable! I gotta give it to Floyd for taking on Shane....he didn't HAVE to, but it was really his only logical option to meet what Floyd wants out of his career...which is mostly money. Yet Shane is a challenge.....one that offers boxing fans as a whole a chance to see Floyd in a real fight where he could loose. They only other fight where I felt Floyd was at risk was when he moved up to face DLH at 154! Even though most said DLH was past his prime DLH was still the bigger man that had enough skills, power and talent to defeat Floyd.....Oscar just faded like he has been known to do and Floyd finished stronger. He deserved the win and he got his biggest payday against his hardest overall challenge......Now we have Shane on tap to give Floyd anther great win.
He faced Baldomir when Baldomir was the linear champion and Judah when Judah was viewed as the #1 WW, well before he was upset by Baldo but the fight was pretty much a done deal prior to that anyway. He also fought Oscar at 154 where and when Oscar was still very dangerous, he also fought Hatton when Hatton was still undefeated. :deal
I don't think that Floyd "ducked" cotto when he retired....Cotto just didn't present the kind of Money or challenge Floyd was looking for to keep him in the game. Remember he retired after he made HUGE amounts of money beatng DLH and Ricky back to back which were the TWO biggest names in the sport at the time which made Floyd a household name. I'm not sure why he decided not to face DLH in a rematch....the money was there? For the most part I thought Floyd retired b/c he wanted to make a dramatic return to reclaim his crown....whoever would take it with his "retirement". Floyd sees himself like the Michael Jordan of the sport. His return was an "EVENT" in itself b/c Floyd knows how to market himself well. When he came back he fought JMM....which wasn't exactly a RISK, but it presented a great name with a great financial upside to set up the fight that everyone wanted to see. JMM gave Pac a lot of problems...>Floyd dominated...the stage was set for the 2 best P4P fighters in the world to square off....one the present P4P king...the other the former P4P king who never lost his title in the ring. Can anyone see the similarities with this fight (PAC vs Floyd) and Joe Friazer vs Ali 1?
How does this have any relevance? Yeah it shows the class of opposition he has faced at Welterweight, (which isnt as good as it could be) but it has nothing to do with who people believe Floyd has ducked.
Everyone at 147.....hasn't fought one decent 147er IMO until Mosley (which i am glad he is fighting) and i hope he wins, which i think he will. But there's Cotto, Margo, Berto (coulda maybe fought him on comeback), Cintron, Quintana, Clottey, Collazo even.....there were many good welters out there. Like his comeback, he fought marquez at 144! and came in overweight, not cool. I don't think no one questions him at the lower weights, but the way i see it as least he is starting to fight actual good welters now. So if he keeps up this trend, I won't complain
It would be one thing if Floyd stated he was looking for the best challenges or the most legacy building types of fights, but Floyd has always been consistant with stating he fights for the Money. He's not ducking fighters b/c he's scared...he's not avoiding fighters b/c he's worried about what they bring to the ring b/c Floyd has always been extremely confident. He just looks for the money fights....there are few fighters who could generate the kind of money that Floyd made with Ricky and DLH. The only ONE time I felt Floyd ducked was against Manny when he completely acted out of character with his accusations and demands. I'd never guess we'd see Floyd show any signs of being concerned about loosing or the danger his foe presented.
True you can only be judged on the names you have fought. Not that he didn't offer enough money or he didn't call me out etc...
