Okay, but we're talking about a man who says he is the greatest fighter who ever lived. A guy that 40% of this forum thinks cannot lose a fight. Do you understand the claim of ducker isn't thrown on most boxers because they aren't out there claiming to be the greatest fighter ever?
I'd agree on Cotto and Margarito. Not Mosley though, he didn't have to agree to face Mosley. Would he not have just ducked him? No doubt he ducked Paul Williams, but didn't everyone but Margarito?
I don't think Mayweather has ever really ducked anyone. When I think of that term "ducking" Riddick bowe comes to mind with Lennox Lewis (ever since getting beaten by him in the 88 olympics.) Now if Mayweather was a mediocre fighter or a fighter on the rise, than you can potentially make that statement and hold some validity to it. During his rise-up he fought any and all comers; as many know he was pretty awesome to watch at the 130-135 classes (especially 130.) But his past 3-4 fights have generated ODL'esque #'s, so at this stage in his career, anyone in his position would only go for high-risk/high-reward (Mosley) vs very high-risk/ lower-reward (PW) I always look at it like this when a forum like this opens-- would Mayweather duck any guy around his weight class who brings some credibility name-wise to the table and guarantees him 20 million? Probably not...
Anyone can claim to be the best fighter to have ever lived. Floyd's character has been the same ever since a young AM fighter. He's always been confident, cocky and brash. NO ONE BELEIVES FLOYD WHEN HE SAYS HE'S THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME! NO ONE! The only one who might believe it is himself. BUt that is what makes FLoyd as good as he is I think. He talks himself up so much that it forces him to back up his talk...and yea...he chooses his opponents but so did DLH, Ray leonard, ALI ect..ect.. ect... Sure...the Ali's, Leonards of the sport chose harder challenges but they were all about their LEGACY and fighting to secure their place in boxing history as the VERY best or one of the very best to have ever laced up a pair of gloves. Floyd has never said he faught for legacy....just money. ANd I respect that b/c he doens't try to come off as anything else. Sure he can talk like he's the best and act the way he does, but that is all about his persona and how to market his business which happens to be himself. He may be a cherry picker, but in my opinion not a ducker.
So then you agree? Coming back and signing to fight JMM was a big '**** you' to top WWs who should be getting onto that star level. Floyd got brought up by Oscar and now he is trying to put a glass ceiling in place. Too bad for him that Pacquiao shattered it when he retired.
I think he would have made less for Baldo....i remember hearing he was offered $8mill for Margo. Remember in the radio interview where Floyd was going he was on like $20mill of something like that for Baldo. Damn what a lier.
So you respect a guy who wants to weasel money out of you while giving you a bare minimum product? You're wasting your time watching boxing. It can be MUCH better than this.
:rofl I was rolling with that one myself. I think he made $8 Mill with Baldo which was the same payday to face Marg. The RA Interview is where Floyd was caught completely off guard and was taken out of his game for the first time ever. Unfortunately this kind of "challenge" didn't happen in the ring, but it was cool to see how he reacted....the statement or lie about makeing $20 mil just showed that Floyd was out of his comfort zone and reaching for anything to turn the tides in his favor. I think he's more intelligent INSIDE the ring than out.
But his next fight is against a guy who is ranked #1 in the division and who many feel will beat him. Isn't it time to lay off a little?
It's about time, yeah. But this fight was forced on him by the cancellation of another fight. We all know it, whether it's admitted or not. I have always said that floyd is amazingly gifted, I never knock his skills or talent. I just blast him on his claims and opposition selection.
I'd agree he could have faced Margarito instead of Baldomir, but he gained more from the Baldomir bout. Cotto v Mayweather could have happened. Firstly, Arum wouldn't allow Cotto because he didn't believe he was ready. Then Mayweather was intent on "retiring"/taking a break. Not necessarily ducking, but people see it in different ways. Marquez was obviously a comeback/warm-up bout for a future bout with Pacquiao. But it can't have been just Marquez who knew about Floyd coming back, so he called him out. The "Top" Welters no doubt knew about him making a comeback.
Which is fine, if he would admit it. He didn't need a come back or warm up fight, he says he is the greatest ever, why would he beat up a little dude to warm up?
What I respect is Floyd's approach to being the best he can be and being consistant with voicing "WHY" he fights. Floyd dedicates himself to his craft and preparations to the sport that is incredible....Like PAC they put 110% in preparing themselves for battle. Myself....I'd like to see Floyd tested. Fighting guys like Shane, PAC, Williams, DLH, Wright ect....but for someone who makes a living as a prize fighter...putting their lives at Risk every time they fight....I got respect for that. I can't talk down about any pro fighter at this level. I can disagree with their decisions and actions but I'm not in place to pass judgement on who they fight in such a dangerous sport like this one. NOW....with all that said....I see SOOOO MANY POSTERS defending Floyd when Floyd has NO ONE ELSE TO BLAME BUT HIMSELF for the critisim he gets. He brings it upon himself with his mouth and actions with regard to how he chooses to manage his career. If a great boxer and equally great in talent makes it a point to come off a Floyd does he has to expect the critisim....A LOT of it is unfair and based purely on NOT LIKING FLOYD himself and less to do with his overall career, b/c FLoyd has a GREAT career. His resume isn't great but overall Floyd as a fighter and what he's accomplished in this sport is great. Floyd offers boxing a different dynamic that is a "love or hate" relationship. But we need that in my opinion. Floyd is good for the sport for obvious and subtle reaons.
Oh yeah, he is great for boxing. The good vs bad formula is the best formula for any sport. I want nothing more than to see Shane bust Floyd's head up and knock him out. But he needs to fight guys like shane for it to work. Now that he finally is, he gets credit from me.
