I'm using this fight because a lot of people are making up these ridiculous jean claude van-damme movie scenario where Calzaghe somehow unleashed some mystical super powers and dominated this old man. Calzaghe was supposed to win, Hopkins was old.

Nobody ever claimed it was a great Calzaghe performance, and if they did they have probably seen less of Calzaghe than you.

It's one of his worst performances, facing a stylistic problem. Also he looks to be declining himself.

But he got the job done, like always

Job done, agreed not good enough to be used as a measuring stick of greatness. The odds were against Hopkins in this fight. Somebody who is supposedly so great shouldn't have had such a hard time winning.

Considering he was supposed to be so easy, why did he whoop Tarver's ass? I mean, didn't you just advise Calzaghe to fight Tarver? :nut

You aren't making much sense here.

Besides, one fight doens't make a break your chances of becoming a great. It's the overall resume and skillset. I doubt I'll convince you his is worthy, judging by some of your ignorance over previous opponents. Oh well, the historians will decide.

Hopkins is still #4 p4p in the Ring ratings and would likely beat anyone at 175 other than Calzaghe.

    Joe Calzaghe

    45-0 (32 kos)
11 year reign as champ at 168 and unified the belts
    Ring champ at 175
Fighting at top level even at 36
Beat Hopkins (who was ranked #3 p4p by Ring at the time)
Beat Kessler (top 12-15 p4p by most people at the time)
Beat Lacy (all the 'experts' were picking Jeff)
    Beat Eubanks (legendary English middleweight)
Turned back would-be Buster Doulasses like Robin Reid, Byron Mitchell, Omar Sheika and Mario Veit
Will soon add Roy Jones to the list
Could very well finish a brilliant career with a victory over Pavlik

It's funny that you fail to point out that Tarver was weakened for that fight because of all of the weight that he had to lose after bulking up for the Rocky movie. Memorable fights and beating great fighters make fighters great not statistics or historians.

By the way, if Pacquaio loses tonight Joe will be a unaninous pick for best p4p fighter in boxing. As it is he does lead some lists.

Historians will decide whether he goes down as a great. Not guys from ESB. I think he deserves to. No matter what I say, I doubt you'll agree. So we may as well leave it there.

Those guys from ESB you talk are the reason Calzaghe gets paid in the first place, they are what you call fans, loyal supporters of the sport. Nobody should have more say so than fans, afterall we are the ones that will pass on stories about great fights and great fighters, just like our elders talk to us about past greats.

I actually picked Calzaghe to win, I thought Lacy was too stiff, never thought much of Lacy. Didn't predict such an ass whooping neither.
