A post by Janitor in another thread made me think of this subject...along with another poster who considered Maxim a 'poor/weak' champion which is absolutely ludricrous... Greb fought absolutely everyone in his era...Maxim was close... Of heavyweights and light heavyweights...Who fought the tougher field, Greb or Maxim? Greb fought: Tunney, Brennan, Miske, Loughran, Tommy Gibbons, Gunboat Smith, Rosenbloom, Levinsky, McTigue, Norfolk, Slattery, Delaney, Dillon....whew...problably left someone off. Maxim fought: Charles, Moore, Walcott, Bivins, Pastrano, Patterson, Machen, Lesnevich, Mills, Marshall, Sheppard, and Bolden... Greb certainly fought the greats more often than Maxim, which is absolutely incredible...Few if any compare to him in this regard. But what does the board think of the talent of both resumes, and which group is the better?... A difficult question. For overall talent, IMO I believe the Maxim group of heavyweights/light heavyweights has the overall edge. For the entire career, including all fights...It's Greb.
Jeez, don't know who you are but it's a great but unexpected question. Greb IMO is the greatest middle of them all and maybe the best l/h also but...Maxim is so underated, now I'll admit I watched the tapes to see how good or bad he was, and the conclusion i came too was; he was so much better a boxing technican/boxer than I'm am a coach than it should be called a NC! For what it is worth, i think Joe fought the better big guys, but Greb did better.
You make a valid point here. Greb had more overall depth and did better against them but Maxims competition against greats is incredible and he managed to put a black eye on most of their records.
Charles and Moore are generally ranked higher than anyone on Greb's list, and Maxim had a combined total of eight fights against them.
How would Greb fare against Maxim's competition? What are the board's opinions? Charles, Moore, Sheppard, Walcott, Bivins, Pastrano, Marshall, a young Patterson, Bolden, Lesnevich, Mills, and Machen? That is a very formidible line-up of fighters...
