Calzaghes resume has the benefit of past prime greats on it like Jones, Hopkins, Eubanks, and even Woodhall, Mitchell and Brewer were past there best. Vitalis resume would have benefited from old versions of Holyfield, Tyson and lets say a comebacking Lewis

Calzaghe I think. Even so some of his comp was past it´s best overall it´s better and tougher.

Calzaghe I'd say. Vitali has fought bugger all really, when it's thought about. Calzaghe has also unified belts, fought more former champions and he beat the closest thing to an ATG he fought in Hopkins, Vitali came up short against a faded Lewis.

Vitali Klitschko : Juan Carlos Gomez , Sam Peter , Danny Williams , Corrie Sanders , Kirk Johnson , Lennox Lewis (LTKO) , Larry Donald , Ross Puritty , Chris Byrd (L)
i did not bring Arreola and Kevin Johnson , but they might prove themselves as good some day.
i did not bring Orlin Norris as he was too severely undersized and also past his prime by the time he fought vitali.

Joe Calzaghe : Roy Jones , Bernard Hopkins , Mikkel Kessler , Byron Mitchell , Chris Eubank Robin Reid

had i brought Jeff Lac i also had to bring Obed Sullivan , Herbie Hide , Chris Arreola and Kevin Johnson in favor of Klitschko and it would just make it worse for calzaghe. had i brought peter manfredo jr. and mario veit in favor of calzaghe , i also had to bring Orlin Norris , Timo Hoffman and Ed Mahone , Dicky Ryan and Julius Francis in favor of klitschko.

summary : Klitschko has a much better resume. it is not even close.
P4P however , i doubt if he should be ranked above calzaghe.
but h2h resume , relative to their divisions , vitali has it much better , even before his comeback.

They are fighting the best available to them, what more can you ask, right now I would say Calzage but we dont know if after Vlad is gone who will emerge from his ashes

Calzaghe, and also the Klitchko's benefit from being so much bigger in height and weight than everyone they box usually. Calzaghe was the same size. Imagine how great Calzaghe would have been had he been the size of the Klitchkos at heavyweight?

Calzaghe benefited from being far faster than a lot of his opponents. Think how much better Vitali would be if he were that fast. ...

That is actually a pretty good point. Klitschko has absolutely had size advantages in virtually all of his fights. Neither fighter has taken considerable risk in the opponents they pick. But, Calzaghe seems to have managed his career more carefully. Beating Hopkins and Jones cemented his legacy, but they were certainly not in their prime (especially Jones). Vitali has faced more variety in regard to his opponent's skill sets, although the only opponent I can think of who could compare to the credentials of BHop or Jones is Lennox Lewis (a fight Vitali technically lost). Which is worth more in the context of each fighter's career; Calzaghe's speed and slickness or Vitali's size and power?

Calzaghe never fought anyone close to the same level as a reigning Lewis, but all in all I'd say he shades this. Vitali has been living in the worst heavyweight era ever.

For Vitali...who exactly would he have picked? Honestly? After Lennox? (Say his brother and I will say Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, I swear to God, I will go Pong on you)

Vitali was not interested in matches with washed up X champions for the most part. Let's hope he doesn't;t fight Holyfield, Moorrer or Bowe. Vitlai was going to fight Tyson. Tyson went to Europe to promote the fight, but lost to Danny Williams, so Vitali fought Williams instead.

On the surface, it would appear Calzaghe fought better opposition, but the 168 pound division was rather thin on talent when Calzaghe was king.

Vitali fought 10 men who were ranked in Ring Magazine top ten when he fought them, or previous world champions. How many does Calzaghe have on his resume that were ring magazine ranked when he fought them, or previous world champions?
