Who gave Carlos Monzon his closest or toughest fight?

As was Valdez being in his 16th year as a professional.
Perhaps a circa 1973 Valdez fight might have been King Carlos' toughest.
As it is I'll go with Griffith 2 as well along with the Bennie title scrap. I remember reading that when Bennie's trainer told him he had to go all out in the final round, Bennie couldn't believe it was the final round?? Jeez, that night he could have gone all night?
The King once said Emile was the ONLY fighter he fought that made him do things he didn't want to do.
Still Carlos prevails in all IMO.

 

Emile Griffith was just a hell of a fighter

 

Emile while much slower then in his prime did very well in this fight due to his having Carlos so well timed. Throughout the bout he landed right hand leads and was never tagged by Carlos. Of interest in their first bout which ended due to Griffiths legs cramping badly in the 14th, Carlos also never tagged him. One of Carlos weaknesses was he was not a feinter and going against a straight up puncher was made for Emile's skills, a fight between them in Griffith's prime would have been very interesting and he may just have taken it.

 

Emile Griffith was a magnificent fighter..all understated and undersung...when he was focused and in tune...having him reach that state was something that used to drive Gil Clancy crazy.

 

Monzon did alot of things very subtle .You had to pay attention when watching him to really appreciate his skills .

 

This essentially says it all...and I've been trying to say this for years.

 

First time I viewed him I thought this guy fights like a robot......after a couple more viewings Im like the only robotic comparsion I'd compare Monzon to would be the terminator!!
Monzon had such a high boxing IQ .
He also one of those guys he is way stronger then they appear.
