Awarding even rounds (as opposed to 9-9 rounds which occur when the leading fighter is penalized a point for a foul) is discouraged, since, as Harry Mullan writes in the Ultimate Encyclopedia of Boxing, "It is barely conceivable that, in three minutes of sustained action, one man did not land at least a few more punches than the other, or show a wider range of skill."

now, the upcoming fight between diaz and marquez offers this dilemma..if it is a close round, who gets the round? the favored fighter in juan manuel marquez or the hometown guy in juan diaz?

the fight between john and marquez in indonesia, the judges clearly give the close rounds to the hometown boy...but the jmm-diaz fight is in america..there is a big difference there...so im pretty confident that close rounds with go to marquez. (i also think that close rounds would favor john rather than juarez)

but if the fight is between an underdog with a home-country advantage against a favored fighter (betting odds), who gets close rounds?

This thread assume that there would be no even rounds as used by many judges on championship fights..

I don't know what you mean by 'should' get the rounds but I think judges tend to go with the atmosphere in the arena if they can't tell who won a round. If the fans think their boy is doing OK that often influences the judges IMO.

i think it's just fair to give the round to the hometown guy, the road boxer must have a mentality of having to win the round convincingly to get the favorable end...that's why you hardly see a favored fighter on the road..cant really believe why jmm goes to indonesia and uses the same same he did in jmm-pac 1

You could look at it the other way and say the guy with the fans behind him has the mental edge because of that and the guy who's fighting out of town needs to be mentally tougher just to hang in.
If there are diferences in glove weights or ring size or anything between their respective backyards that will probably favour the home guy too.

Yeah, I don't really think going away rom home suits JMM's style. Going away you probably need to go forward more than he's done when I've seen him to get the rounds.

the weekend fight would be in diaz hometown, so maybe the judges may give close rounds to diaz..but i do not see that..i think he would get close rounds..

in the pac-jmm fight, the slightly favored fighter (pacquiao) gets the close rounds...round 1 and 7

Your not suggesting that judges can get bought of by the TV networks are you?

Never heard the like in my life.

I think the style plays a part in who gets the close rounds too.

'Effective Aggression' is one of Harold Ledermans favourite sayings and I think a lot of judges use it as a deciding factor too.

Counter punchers like JMM or B-Hop often lose out i it doesn't look like they're taking the fight to their opponent.

one thing about marquez is, he may lack aggressiveness but he is never outpunched...boxing afterall is hitting and hurting.. so who lands more telling blows wins

that is seriously in contention, as the most ******ed comment of the day..

come on mate, who cares where the fight is based or who brings the fans, its in the ring its settled..

sadly, a road warrior has to win, his rounds more convincingly, but that doesnt make it right.. far from actually..

Give rounds to the people who win them. That's how you score a fight.

If you bet on a fight (for example,) you want to know how these things work.

in america, the favored fighter is most likely to win the close rounds...and round 1 seems to be always close as it is the feel out round
