I have just watched Ali vs Terrell again, and I must say I wasn't impressed!
Anyway, I got to thinking "Who would beat Ali at this stage of his career?".

Looking at this fight and others around the same time I think the following would trouble Ali; some more than others.

    1. Joe Louis.
    2. Larry Holmes.
    3. Jersey Joe Walcott.
    4. Rocky Marciano.
    5. Vladimir Klitschko.

I can give reasons for each fighter if requested. Please offer more than "It's Ali, and he is the best ever" type arguments.

No Frazier, huh? I wouldn't favour Louis over him, and Holmes would be an interesting match-up. I'd say Lewis would give him trouble, and I think he beats Wlad. I think he also beats Rocky and about Jersey Joe, I don't know what to say.

I didn't include Frazier because he beat a near prime Ali. I think Walcott would give Ali trouble with his counter punching and Marciano with his pressure. I noticed how Terrell landed clean jabs on Ali; that's why I think Louis and Klitshko could give him trouble.

What I am really getting at is I don't believe the "Ali was untouchable" line. I'm not saying all these fighters would beat him necessarily, but I don't think he's classes above them, either.

Aside from who would have given him nightmares, it is his fight with Terrell that causes me to question how overall great he really was. Athletically he was superb but his boxing techniques as shown in that bout left a lot to be desired! I didn't recall Earnie landing much in the way of his jab on Ali but then he didn't throw much of anything due to his eye/vision problems he said were from Ali thumbing him in a clinch in the 1st round.

Dempsey only gives Ali nightmares in negotiations...

Lewis, Holmes, Marciano, Walcott, Charles (interesting to be sure), Tyson all give him big trouble and potentially hand Ali a loss.

Henry cooper knocked him down and would have knocked him out if angelo Dundee didn't cheat by using smelling salts witch if found out would have meant on the spot disqualification, also Dundee ripped ali's gloves to give them extra time. other wise Cooper would have knocked ali out cold, that's if ali could get off his seat without the smelling salts and extra time at the end of the round witch is very debateable if he could of got up looking at film of the bout.

oh and by the way that is fact that Dundee and ali cheated because Dundee admitted it in a television programme made just before Dundee died for alis 70 birthday celebrations.

The obvious effort that you've put into this list makes the 1960s/70s choices all the more baffling.

My boy Kenny Norton had Ali´s number. He proved time after time that he was the special one who could consistently defeat him with a clever strategy, systematically negating Ali´s assets and frustrating him.

Lennox Lewis his the height, boxing skills and wicked right hand along with some precision. Ali dancing on the outside with his hands down is a dangerous gamble. Ali was quick and he would have to be to beat Lewis. Ali doesn`t really have the one shot power to KO Lewis so he would have to find a way to outscore him.

In and out side to side. He could do it but it could be a rough night for Ali.

I think Larry Holmes gives Ali some problems with the jab and ring IQ. Walcott and his footwork and counterpunching.

Louis, Walcott and Marciano? Not the names one would expect. I request reasons.

Lewis might be trouble but I think Ali would beat him.
Lewis has size and an intelligent, simple style as well as power.
I don't think Louis does so much, he'd get touched up on the outside, wouldn't have the movement to find his way inside and possibly be stopped late.
Holmes would definitely give him problems, but like many others, I see Holmes as an inferior Ali...so that's kind of self explanatory.
