I was more impressed with Ali against Folley, to be honest. At no point did I say that Ali didn't win clearly on points. I still think Ali thumbed him and I have seen photos of him thumbing Liston!
I think Ali carried Folley for a few rounds. Ali has never been accused of thumbing Liston, and in the wake of Liston's corner retirement his corner were casting around for any excuses they could find. If there was any question of thumbing I am sure they would have used it.
My point about Ali's lack of power stands up because he didn't have the power to keep fighters like Norton and Frazier off him, so he isn't stopping Louis, Marciano or Holmes. Folley fought nothing like Walcott. Zora was a textbook fighter whereas Joe gave you more angles and hit hard with both hands. I haven't said he'd beat Ali, just I think he'd give him something different to solve. As to Joe Louis, the footwork comparison is interesting; could Ali move for 15 rounds against Louis? Who would lead and who would counter punch? Well, that depends on the fighters, but I can see Louis countering Ali's jab and vice versa. Futch got Norton to out jab Ali, though so I don't see it as a stretch to see Louis managing it. I honestly think Louis has a great chance of being Ali. He has the tools to do so; great jab, body punching, power in both hands, determination and finishing ability. In no way am I knocking Ali, I just don't think he is unbeatable like some claim.
He should be, and I wouldn't want Giachetti in Larry's corner for that one. But Futch's strategizing would change the dynamic considerably, so that Holmes may come closer to decisioning 1966-1967 Ali than anybody else.
