This was quite a tough choice despite me spending approximately 10 seconds deciding who to vote for.

It's tough because of how long both reigned for and how dominant in the ring Golovkin was.

But there 1 single criteria that has to separate them beyond any reasonable doubt.

Hopkins was "arguably" number 1 for a while, but then he destroyed those counter arguments by completely unifying the division and defending against his number 1 contender.

Now don't get me wrong, I thought a Golovkin beat Canelo first time round. I actually thought he beat him 2nd time round as well. But there's enough people who disagree that their opinion has to be considered as well. There's never been a moment when Golovkin has been universally regarded as the absolute champion of the division, and that's painful to say. Real painful. Because I know in my gut he'd have wiped out Cotto with ease, but he didn't. I also knew in my gut he'd wipe out Canelo with ease, and he didn't.

There's also a secondary line of argument that's difficult to consolidate. Golovkin aged as his opponents got better. Meaning against his best opposition he was in very close fights, some say its due to age, some due to his opponents being better now.

Either was I don't think it's reasonable to declare Golovkin as having a better reign. I really don't.

Lol. Hopkins by far, GGG was just more entertaining to watch. Hopkins was a much better fighter with a more impressive resume

GGG is not done fighting at age 39, ask me when his career is over and yes he cleanly beat Canelo the first timeout was robbed into a draw Canelo is arguably better than any middle weight Hopkins beat.

Oscar was a blown up lightweight though. I have a hard time calling him good at middle weight.

    theres no comparison.

but GGG did well to hold onto the first title he won in a fight, from Lemieux, for I think 4 opponents?
edit - i think its the ONLY time he won a title from an opponent.

Hopkins' resume is packed with nice soft filling.

And Golovkin fought killers throughout his whole reign. Hopkins and Golovkin both reigned in weak eras, Hopkins' reign was probably slightly better since he was a champion longer.

Maybe longer in time but not in amount of defences.

Had GGG gotten the decision in the first Canelo fight that he should’ve, he’d have a case to be ranked ahead of B-Hop, but not now.

But hey, G is still active. Let’s say, in a miraculous scenario, Charlo and Andrade fight each other and unify while Golovkin unifies with Murata, and GGG beats Murata and then goes on to have a showdown with the winner of Andrade/Charlo to crown an undisputed and start a new lineage, a win in that scenario would make him a greater MW than B-Hop.

But obviously that’s on the border of whisful thinking.
