Just tocmake my point in case it wasnt clear:
I dont rate alphabet titles and paper championships.

Golovkin never eon the middleweight title, fought for it twice and probably should have gotten the decision but alas he didnt.

De La Hoya arguably didn't get past Felix Sturm, a guy who was roughly on the same level as Martin Murray, Daniel Geale, etc. That's a nice name on Hopkins' ledger, but not a huge scalp to have.

I'm a Golovkin fan but this is an important point. Conflating "regular" belts with "full" titles and then "full" titles with Lineal/Linear ones just makes everything too complicated. You either are THE champion or not, and Hopkins was; Golovkin was not. All of this talk about defense totals has become hand-waving. Hopkins had 6 and GGG had 0.

Don't get me wrong, I feel for Golovkin because his career was stymied by politics. Had he been given a shot at Sturm back in 2008 or so, there's no way he could have been put on the back-burner for as long as he was. And I don't think anyone would be arguing whether or not he was a great fighter. Hell, I think his ability to arguably defeat a man largely seen as the best fighter today twice at 35+ years of age is a good testament to how good he was in his prime. But he didn't get those chances early and his official failure to get over the hump might always haunt him. The good thing, however, is GGG does have a chance at redemption. If he gets past Murata and then fights the #2 guy (Charlo right now), he can acquire the title he failed to against Alvarez, the Middleweight Championship of the World. To do so at 39 or 40 years of age would be a fantastic feat and I hope he pulls it off.

    Let me help you:

"An otherwise routine triumph for the Kazakh superstar at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood was notable for being Golovkin’s 21st successful world title defence at middleweight. That number breaks the existing middleweight record set by former undisputed champion Bernard Hopkins, who was able to defend his belts on 20 occasions."

    Conclusion: YDKSAB.
