Punching power is definitely not a skill. It's an ability.

Hopkins was always a crafty fighter though. He knows the game better then Floyd, defensively or offensively. He's a far more versatile fighter. He's been hit just about as many times as Floyd and yet possesses half the speed and reflex.

Ability: natural gift for something: a particular gift for doing something well

Punching power can't be developed that much at all. You either have the ability to hit really hard or you don't, just as either you're really fast or you're not. Natural talent is not a skill.

Hopkins is not that slow. And I must question why his impeccable skill prevented him from dominating Clinton Mitchell in his first pro fight, Segundo Mercado in 1994, Jermaine Taylor (2x), and Joe Calzaghe.

Taylor's athleticism and Joe C's workrate gave him problems, and he didn't have nearly as much skill early on as skills are acquired....Natural ability is not.

Tommy Hearns was not a big puncher until Manny got a hold of him and taught him how to tighten up on his shots and put more body into them. You can teach a fighter how to punch harder. I think it's a trivial topic. But either way, Hopkins < Mayweather.

Technique plays a part, sure, but for the most part you either have it or you don't. Nobody can "teach" Paulie Malignaggi to be a world class puncher. He just isn't one.

  12. Hopkins isnt a pure boxer like floyd lets not forget how easy roy outboxed him the first time and taylor outboxed him twice

Mayweather is the more complete boxer, a wider veriety of skills & more versatile.

Hopkins makes far fewer technical errors, though Floyd can get away with almost all of them given his natural athleticism.

So what? He's over 40 years old. Taylor is already washed up and just over 30. Hopkins would have to have a ridiculous amount of skill just to get in the ring and compete for 12 rounds at his age.
