I can't see how you could give it to Jones...he was fighting guys like David Telescope and Glen Kelly while everyone of B-Hop's opponent at 175 was a big time fighter
easily jones and jones legacy was not built on one division, rather at least 3. its an unfair question, hopkins real division was MW, he was both old and thus sporadic at LHW
I like Roys , Hopkins had one true opponent at 175 who was in his prime and he lost twice ( really ) to him.
If you want an actual debate, put some effort in and analyse each guys resume at the weight. What you've written above is absolute nonsense.
Well I like Hop’s more... But I think I would go RJJ, but the difference is slim. Both had a 6-7 year (by rings ratings) as the champ or top 2 in the division. I think RJJ has the bigger wins and loses as well to balance it and make it close. Neither to me (and I am a big Hops fan) is more than a blip on the radar of the LHW landscape overall though.
Roy's LHW resume: McCallum Griffin - Loss Griffin Hill Del Valle Grant Frazier Johnson Telesco Hall Harding Harmon Gonzalez Kelly Woods Tarver Tarver - Loss Johnson - Loss Tarver - Loss Ajamu Hanshaw Trinidad (C-W) Calzaghe - Loss Sheika Lacy Hopkins - Loss Bernard's LHW resume: Tarver Wright (C-W) Calzaghe - Loss Pavlik - (C-W) Ornelas Jones Pascal - Draw Pascal Dawson - NC Dawson - Loss Cloud Murat Shumenov Kovalev - Loss Smith - Loss What's the criteria? Points to consider: Roy's losses hurt his legacy. Bernard's longevity where he won titles at an advanced age deserves huge respect. Roy was the unified LHW champ. Roy made history by regaining the LHW titles after dropping back from HW. Bernard's biggest wins were fought at C-W's and weren't really LHW fights. Despite his losses, I think Roy comes out on top. Roy had the better wins at the weight. Collectively, Roy's wins over: McCallum, Griffin, Hill, Johnson, Harding, Hall, Gonzalez, Woods and Tarver etc, were better than Bernard's wins over: Tarver, Wright, Pavlik, Roy, Pascal, Cloud, Murat and Shumanov.
RJJ IMO is known much more outside the diehard fan's circle, specifically his DQ & rematch blitz over Griffin & then his Tarver fights. I've learned that most casual fans don't know Hop outside his wins over Tito & DLH. So I'd go RJJ from a casual fan & die hard POV.
What Hopkins did was tremendous since he was in his 40's and two weight classes above his prime weight. To be among the best of your generation under those circumstances is absolutely amazing. One of the great achievements in boxing history. But let's not lose sight of the fact that Jones was a much more dominant LHW during his best years at the weight. He reached a pinnacle that was clearly above the one Hopkins reached at the weight. Not surprising since he spent a big chunk of his prime there while Hopkins was years past his during his whole time at the weight, but it is what it is in terms who reached the highest peak at LHW. RJJ clearly did.
