Who had greater ability: OLIVARES (circa Rose fight) or HAGLER (circa Sibson fight)?

This is a little bit tiresome now. Do you know what 'circa' means? It basically means 'from around that time'. Rose was a high profile win for Olivares, and an excellent performance. Therefore, the Rose win was in Ruben's peak period. I have (more than once I think) explained that the thread is not just about that singular win, it is about the quality either man showed at his peak (which was indeed exemplified in the mentioned fight). Do you have an answer to this thread-question, or do you want to keep trying hard to pick holes and boring us both at the same time?

Comparing Olivares-Rose to Camacho-Leonard? Now there's an exaggeration.

It was Olivares's title-winning performance and a very good performance I might add so I certainly see the thread starter's point of view.

wow Aussie bias abit there Rose was still handy

Olivares win over Rudkin always impressed me despite not seeing it just looks good on paper and sounds good.

    Anyway to answer the question.

I say Olivares he just seemed to be the more natural BOXER. He seemed to be able to suss guys out on his own and adapt to his fight. Hagler tended to need tactical help and was much more of a fighter told to do something and he did it - not always a bad thing though.

I admit i am a big fan of both guys, and Olivares has really grown on me lately.

If this thread is still aorund ill go in to more detail at the weekend

Hagler was very, very good vs Sibson.

One of his best performances, he used his jab very well. His double jab in the 5th was a thing to behold, cut down a good challenger in no time, was in control the whole fight.

No no mate fair enough, I thought because you said you would write more at the weekend if the thread was still alive that you had some more to add, but if you're cool with leaving it at that then I thank you for your input. I like reading the explanations of the more established members of the Classic, so I was just probing for some elaboration, but I'll wait and see if anyone else adds their opinion. It's a tricky question, two great fighters, I go with Hagler but wouldn't have any cause for argument with anyone who said otherwise, two of my favourites. Cheers :good

no problem infact ill expand on it abit more

Hagler was a well oiled machine. He was a solid boxer. He came inside with fast counter-combinatiosn generally from the southpaw stance but could do it from the right orthodox stance also. He was an aggresive boxer with good skills and a very complete reportoire.

Ruben Olivares was a boxer-fighter. He had the skills and he worked out his opponent with his skills before turning it on in fighting trying to wear them out. He had brillaint footspeed that helped him close the distance on opponents. His variety of punches were superb ixed to head and body in combinations.

In terms of skill and technical ability they are very very close. Hagler perhaps edging it as he was a more complete boxer. But as fighters its different.

Haglers mentality was a good asset after the Antuofermo fight. He wanted to end it and prove he was better. This helped him but i think it took away from his boxing mind he lacked that adaptability during rounds if his plan wsnt working and seemed to rely on his cornermen for the directions on strategy. However Hagler did stick to a gameplan even if it looked like it was failing but he stuck it out till it suceeded but he lacked that little minor adjutments.

Ruben however seemed to be able to figure it out himself he would mould himself to hsi opponent do what needed to be done with little adjustments as he went along.

Think of it as there is a wall in the way. Haglers plan is to climb straight up the middle. So he gets to it and eventually gets up to the top andd over the wall but struggles to find a grip to get up but he does manage. Ruben notices a small crevass further along the wall so he climbs up it instead an dgets over fairly easy.

I think it is that Ruben was the cleverer more natural boxer whereas Hagler had the skills and the mentality but didnt have the same boxing brain.

However, Ruben partied himself out of the Bantamweight division (whee he was amazing) and Hagler stayed at his best division his whole career and maximised himself, so who really is smarter

I was watching some footage i got off RB the other day of Olivares, i can watch him all the time because it's always interesting to see great punching technique that looks different and works so well. I might say Hagler because of some versatility in his prime (in the age sense). But when you consider how comfortable Olivares looked it's razor thin close. Suppose i'll go with Hagler overall though, i always have given weight to dominance, but it's very subjective as Olivares' era was golden.

I'd go with Hagler based on his superior durability. They pretty much nullify each other out in the skill departments, Hagler edging certain areas with Ruben edging others. I do think Hagler was a tad more complete and effective overall, though.
