Hard to tell.. I would say Frazier because he actually tested it against far better fighters. I do know that Frazier would hospitalize Peter for good if they had ever fought, and have him consume his food through a straw. :smoke
Frazier. He fought much better comp also. McCline was bouncing Peter around like a basketball off the canvas.
theres no point in making threads like this, because soo as you mention an old scool fighter they are always going to get overrated
Frazier. Imagine Peter's ugly moments (Klit and McCline) and think about what Frazier would do. Vs. Klit he doesn't get hurt as he keeps Wlad off balance with his pressure and probably KOs him w/in about 5 or 6. Vs. McCline Joe laughs off those shots and puts McCline down, again probably w/in about 4 rounds. Now, think about Peter in there against the Foreman that Frazier fought. It hurts to think about honestly. Big George sends Peter back to his goats. Also, does anyone honestly think Peter could go 15-- or 14 or hell, even 12--rounds with Ali?
So instead of forming a rational conclusion by way of observation you are going on hearsay. Glad to know you can highlight the flaws within this argument. This stands as a microcosm of the whole problem with H2H comparisions involving past greats.
it is fair to make h2h comparisons b/c there is without a doubt a lower level of opposition in the HW division today then there were in the 60s an 70s. Even todays HWs would tell you that. Foreman was such an amazing fighter that he was able to fight with some of the best HWs the 90s had to offer and even beat plenty of them. Its hard to imagine any of todays HWs doing that decades in the future
Peter was really hurt against McCline. If it had been Foreman instead of McCline, Peter's career would have ended that night.
Wow, Peter seem to suffer from dyspraxia as it is (Can't put a right hand behind his god damn left), after a Foreman beatdown he wouldn't know what is what :yikes
It's funny because for all intensive purposes, prime Frazier's career actually was ended by Foreman in quick fashion. So if that's your measuring stick, the best you can argue is a draw between the chins of Frazier and Peter.
I am going to get shitted on, but I will take Peter. I don't see Frazier putting himself in the position to get bombed as easily against Wlad as Peter did, but holding all things constant, I don't see Frazier being able to eat the shots Peter did. Not even close. If Foreman split Frazier in half, Wlad's bombs would separate Joe into fourths...
They don't. Wlad has better power slightly and technique and is a much more efficient marksman. Foreman had awesome clubbing power. atsch
I cant imagine McCline ever knocking down Fraiser. However I can imagine George Foreman KTFO of Peter. Fraiser was only knocked down by respectable hitters. Peter was almost KOed by that fairy McCline.
And Joe also took a standing 8 count from a guy who finished 10-29 in Mike Bruce, and got floored twice vs Bonavena and stunned, although Oscar never stopped a good fighter. Frazier didn't have a crappy chin and had legendary determination to stick to his gameplan, but he was most effective when he could slip shots to get inside. When he couldn't do that, he'd eat alot of shots and didn't take it the best, sometimes letting up on his workrate to recover once he was on the inside and having to grit out a win and suffer through the effects after the fight. Being a swarmer, he didn't have a choice- it was either get hit and get inside, or slip and get inside. When it was the former, he showed the effects of it. Even in the first Ali fight, which would've been a dominant win using a 10 point must system and was his real shining moment, he was hospitalized for a myriad of issues after the win despite Ali not really connecting with much in the latter third of the fight, relatively speaking. When Joe's defense was tight and the bob and weave was really working, that's when his offense really took off because his rhythm wasn't thrown off from getting hit. Due to that, his shelf life was never going to be that long as a fighter because eventually that chin and the rest of his body was going to give out because you can't slip everything with that style. Not too dissimilar to Lamon Brewster in that regard although Joe could obviously slip better when he was on. Nobody's arguing that Peter's the better fighter (this thread's not about that), but I guess people have a stigma about saying that a current day fighter can have any attribute that might be better than someone from the 70's. In the context of an entire career and how it'd hold up, I'd rather take Sam Peter's chin for 40 fights than I would Frazier's though.
