The whole idea of having to earn a "right" to fight Ruiz just seems wrong. At any other weight class, a unified champ moving up to challenge for a belt would be considered commonplace. The mystique of the HW division is long gone so I don't really have a problem with either shot. Experience at HW or not, they are more worthy than an inapropriately 13th ranked fringe contender (which happens) or a bogus mandatory with 1 win over a top 15 HW. Anyone that cares to argue that Vaughn Bean or Peter Okhello (yeah, remember that?) "earned" title shots more than Jones or Haye are nuts.
I believe there was one light heavyweight he didn't knockout. I had the fight on tape, it was his last match before moving up. It was the last round and he knocked his oppenent down and out, and the bell for the last round sounded. The rules for that fight stated that a fighter can be saved by the 12th and final round. I will go on Boxrec and check it out, it's been awhile since I watched those old tapes and I may be mistaken. I will get back to you on it.
If the undisputed champion at middle wants to fight the man at super middle, does he not have a right?! NO ONE had a problem with Calzaghe fighting Hopkins at light heavy. NO ONE had a problem with Hatton fighting Mayweather at welter (at least not for the right to fight him). Nothing wrong with the man in one division stepping up to fight the man in another division.
Was that the fight that ended his knockout streak? If so, then yes that was the fight I was thinking of. Moorer was heavy handed as hell at light heavyweight.
Yep, this Mike White guy was the first boxer to go the distance with Moorer, so probably it's the same fight.
Did you see it or did you just check it up on Boxrec? I'm just trying to recall it as I watched it many years ago, I was in shock to see his oppenent out for the count, but the final bell sounded and he was saved by it. Ending Moorer's knockout streak right there, what a tough way for it to end.
Jones was the Undisputed Light Heavyweight champion and Haye was the Undisputed Cruserweight Champion. In a sense they both qualifyed but arguemants can be made as why they shouldnt have.
People have called him a glass chinned joke, not worthy of a challenger. But, the truth is, the guy was the #1 cruiserweight champ just like Wlad is the #1 heavyweight champ. He deserves to fight Wlad, no question. It's like Darchinyan fighting Agbeko, who can say Darchinyan doesn't deserve a shot? Nobody.
Roy Jones Jr. was an estlablished ledgend/ATG Haye was crusierweight champion but not an ATG/ledgend.
