Imagine if Toney had been able to stay in shape and at MW. I mean, he had a great career, with his success as a fat middleweight fighting at heavyweight being impressive, but still, he's a bit of a what-if in terms of his overall MW ranking.

I don't see how anyone can say Greb since there is 0 footage of him fighting so we have no idea what punches he took or how hard they were. I'd say Hagler though

Understandable but remember we can’t see any footage of Napoléon’s military exploits & have to go on accounts alone (& both he & his enemies, to name some of the accountants, are notorious bullsh!tters). Written evidence can still be quite substantial.

I was at my Summer Job on July 30 1977, I watched Carlos Monzon vs Rodrigo Valdes II live on my older sister's 9 inch black and white Emerson television, had permission from, my supervisor to watch the fight at work, he too was a boxing fan. That knockdown by Rodrigo Valdes inflicted to Carlos Monzon was a pure shock to me after reading his autobiography and watching the interview in Spanish with Monzon's trainer Amilcar Brusa, who boasted that his fighter had never touched the canvas in a boxing career that began on Feb 8 1963 with a knockout of Ramon Montenegro in Argentina. While Monzon was my all time favorite middleweight, that knockdown was very legitimate, the way he jumped up at the quick count of two appeared to baffle the assigned referee Roland Dakin, it baffled me too. But give credit to Monzon, he was financially set for life, his manager Tito Lectoure put away money from all of his bouts for Monzon's future, Carlos did motion pictures in Argentina between fights. Retiring after the two Valdes bouts was the right thing to do as he was approaching 35 years of age, he had nothing else to prove as champion in 1977. Many fighters refuse to accept the fact that they could be slipping physically, he did and never came back. I never make excuses for my favorite fighters. When Muhammad Ali lost to Ken Norton on March 31 1973 and suffered a broken jaw on live television, this friend of mine called to heckle me, he said: Your Loudmouth Hero Got His Butt Kicked, he said it laughing. I responded with: I Saw The Fight, Ken Norton Won It Fair And Square, He Was The Better Fighter Today. Suddenly there was a dead silence from my friend, he said he had something to do and hung up.

Rich, due respect, but you’re introducing concepts that have nothing to do with the subject at hand.

You’re trying to use those concepts, to make baseless assumptions in order to establish non existent motives.

The question is Best Chin. Pure and simple.

I’ve read multiple sources, including BoxRec, stating that Monzon was KD’d 3 times by Cambeiro. I provided a clip in which a commentator referenced Monzon being down early in his career.

You mentioned in an earlier post Hagler being lazy sometimes and vulnerable to cuts.

True or not, what does that have to do with the question of Marvin’s chin? The obvious answer is: absolutely nothing.

Who retired as world HW Champ?

Not Chuvalo or Cobb - does that in any way discredit the calculation/perception of their having ATG chins? Of course not.

Again, nothing to do with the question re chin nor has Leonard beating Hagler - no one has even mentioned the outcome of that fight - because it is completely irrelevant to the question.

You said some fans cannot accept the truth of their favourites. Why would you then dismiss out of hand the multiple claims that Monzon was KD’d 3 times in an early career match?

Quit obviously, Gutteridge didn’t necessarily have to be at the fight in question to know the history and know what he was talking about.

When Ali dropped Wepner some pundits claimed it was the first time Chuck had been dropped - wrong - both Liston and Foreman had already turned the trick several years prior.

You can hold to official calls - that’s your prerogative - but we know there have been many calls in boxing that have been abjectly wrong.

I don’t/won’t if that call is completely at odds with realty - as were the calls on the Wepner and Roldan KDs.

Ali and Hagler aren’t my favourites, btw - and I actually shouldn’t even have to state that.

Look at it this way, if you want to extrapolate beyond the simple question posed, - when speculating on a match between Louis and Ali, would you call in Wepner’s “KD” of Ali as a legitimate consideration when assessing Ali’s chin?

Say, to accept it as a legitimate consideration to then draw the conclusion - “Well, if Chuck could put Ali down, if Louis connects flush, he would bury Muhammad”?

In calculating the merits of Ali’s chin, NO ONE factors that official KD ruled in Wepner’s favour, because it wasn’t legit and in no way reflected any measure of Ali’s chin - exactly the same goes for the Roldan “knockdown” of Hagler.

You are correct Pug, But truth be known relating to better chin, both Monzon and Hagler have been officially down. Both were given counts by the referee. So Harry Greb has to have the better chin than both. I read Monzon's autobiography and watch the interview by Monzon's lifelong trainer Amilcar Brusa on a Spanish television network, he boasted that Carlos had not been down in his long career, then the same day, Valdes decks Monzon. That was shocking after watching the interview that I watched, my eyes almost popped out. I think that I better stick to the lounge in the future. But I have never made excuses for Monzon being knocked down by Valdes, it was the conversation piece of my High School graduation party that night.

No need to stick to the Lounge Rich. It’s all good and you’re fine. Just boxing talk and exchanging equal opinions. I move around Classic, General and The Lounge at any rate - variety is the spice of life. :D As to the Valdez KD - Monzon’s instant recovery was amazing - I’ve always said that. Valdez , the same guy who KO’d the otherwise indestructible Bennie Briscoe.

I'll take Thomas Hearns, John Mugabi, and Cyclone Hart against any other middleweight's hardest hitting opponents.

    1) Hagler
    2) Greb
    3) Monzon

Wasn’t Greb knocked out very early in his career or is Boxrec making that up?
