I think you've nailed it! Louis was the only man to stop him. Uzcudun was no puncher, and couldn't put a dent in Carnera's chin in 2 fights ,neither coud he drop Mickey Walker whom Schmeling slaughtered.
first of all, most heavyweights can punch, some are more effective punchers and even some light punchers are accurately dangerous. There is a class of elite punchers, and many other tiers. Usually you can tell if a heavyweight has elite power or skill at hurting and finishing an opponent by results in the pro ring. Ron Lyle and Big Cat were good punchers but failed to KO men that were being KO'd at the time thus IMO overrated as effective punchers IMO and below elite in results. In that case we were talking of the elite comparing the chins of Willard and Primo I said Uzcudun was a pretty good puncher because he did KO Harry Wills, he also KO'd Les Kennedy (who a year earlier w10 over puncher Max Baer) Out of 50 wins Uzcudun stopped 34 men but I would still not put him in the upper bracket of heavyweight punchers and I would list him below Lyle, the point here is that Willard had only 22 wins and out of his 5 losses was Ko'd 3X and he failed against the elite. Primo was 77-6 before he was stopped for the 1st time by an elite puncher (Baer) and 81-7 (Louis but I stated Primo failed against the elite punchers - Baer and Louis. Willard failed when he was matched with what I call an elite puncher (Dempsey) You stated that Willard had a proven chin but what elite punchers did he prove it against. I think both men could be hit despite being Giants . Primo's chin may be underrated Willard may be overrated out of 27 fights he was KO'd 3 X Primo had 102 fights and was KO'd 5 X but his 1st KO loss came after 83 fights I dont see a big difference in jaw strength here and that's my opinion.
Your rationale for deciding who is a good puncher and who isnt is who did they ko? Well Uzcudun ko'd a 38 years old Wills whose chin was never that sturdy and who was on the verge of being stopped when he fouled out to Sharkey. He couldnt dent Walker who was an over blown middlewieght.Willard was never floored until he met Dempsey and he faced three very good punchers whom I named.we also have the testimony of GunBoat Smith stating he was extremely durable. Can't you bring yourself to say "maybe I was a bit off on that one"? It would certainly give you back the credibilty that your posts on this thread have seriously eroded. Do you see anyone else agreeing with you here? Whatever, carry on with the wriggling if you want. No one's convinced.
That is totally irrelevant.Do you see Sharkey dropping Willard? Keep wriggling, your remaining credibilty is walking out the door.:hi:
the relevancy is that Willard failed against the elite punchers he faced and would have failed against Baer and Louis but the only one he faced was Dempsey. Willard was KO'd 3X in 27 fights, sorry if I dont see the steel chin that you are proclaiming.:hi:
Who floored or kod Willard when he was in his prime? Again putting words in my mouth nowhere did I say Willard had a "steel chin" is this the best you can do? Question. Is there anyone who agrees with you on this forum? Answer No! Question .Why do you think that is?:think
Carnera faced two puncher' s, both of them wrecked him.As did several others not known for their power. Willard faced 5 punchers Smith ,Moran,Morris,Dempsey, and Firpo ,two stopped him, Dempsey when he was a fat ring rusty 37 years old ,and Firpo ,when he was over 40.
