I know the answer to this. And any knowledgeable boxing fan does aswell. I want to see what the answers are, i think they will proove my theory about current fighters right.

A majority of fight fans on here will say SRR. Even though the answer is clearly Floyd Mayweather Junior.

My theory is, that fighters of the modern era, are being under rated, when compared to fighters of older eras. Even though fighters of older eras, often had fundamental problems. From what i saw of SRR, his combination punching was 2nd to none, however his defence, well at times, was non-existent.

Fighters of the modern era, e.g Floyd Mayweather, Roy Jones Junior and to an extent Joe Calzaghe, while better at certain things then old school fighters, will always be classified as inferior.

Mayweather sr started it but i think little floyd perfected it.i seen mayweather sr fight his ass off against srl but he fights nothing like floyd, i think he was even more defensive minded.floyd did not get that way until he started fighting 15 pounds heavier then his natural weight !

 :rofl :nut i thought you were talking about mayweather sr and jr, not srr and pbf !
srr to more risk in his fights, he was not as defensive minded as pbf is.so if you want to say pbf was better because of that then i think thats a opinion not a bad one though.

Floyd is the better defensive fighter of the two, that much is pretty obvious to anyone knowledgable of the two fighters. What else is obvious is that Robinson is the better fighter overall.

There are many top fighters around today that are fundamentally flawed as well. In fact all of them are. People see minor issues when looking at footage of older fighters and write the fighters off as inferior based on a technical flaw without realizing how immensely flawed the best in the game today are. Those are the ignorant ones.

Floyd is the superior defensive boxer.

Robinson wasn't known for being a terrific defensive fighter, even at welterweight. Good, but not great.

    Floyd.

Robinson would still whoop him. The best defense is a good offense... Robinson not only had a good offense, he had the best offense.

Remember when Mayweather said he's better than Robinson? Here is an interesting stat: Floyd retired at 39-0, an outstanding record, no doubt. Robinson was 40-0 just 26 months into his career, with wins against the likes of Sammy Angott, Jake Lamotta and Fritzie Zivic. He then lost his next fight to Lamotta (who was a middleweight against the welterweight Robinson), but didn't lose again until he was 128-1 about 8 years later, with wins over the likes of Henry Armstrong, Jake Lamotta, Tommy Bell, Jimmy Doyle, Sammy Angott, Kid Gavilan, Bobo Olson and many others contenders in between.

In other words: shut the **** up Floyd.

Mayweather just does what sugar ray invented as far as defence goes only better, but then again mayweather hasn't been in there with fighters anywhere near the quality of sugar ray robinsons opponents so who knows but by the looks of it, mayweather is harder to hit than robinson who was almost impossible to hit flush himself

The question is only asking who had the better defense.

Not who had the better resume, who would win head to head... nothing else but who had the better defense plain and simple.

I think its pretty clear that PBF had the better defense.

That doesnt mean that he would beat SRR or anything else.

But people go way to overboard with blind worship for the classic fighters. They cant even admit that perhaps a current fighter could do one thing a bit better than an older ATG.

Yes, you're right. Adding substance to a thread is worthless. It would be far better if everyone just replied saying "yes" or "no". That way we could fill up 10 pages with one words answers! The purpose of the thread was to make people concede a modern fighter can do something better, because the answer is pretty obvious. The OP said they knew the answer already. Therefore it was a pointless thread, and my pointing out (the obvious) that Robinson would own Mayweather it's just doing what annoys the OP. kthx

Floyd clearly has the better defense. Not that it's that relevant though, both have completely different style. Robinson's defense was good, not great, (It was largely based around his footwork) it was his offense that set him apart from the rest.

Floyd has the better defense for sure...But IMO,that's got to do more with his style than technique..Floyd is a defensive fighter...He works from a defensive posture...Always...unless you are Gatti,Corales slow-ass type.

Sugar Ray was an offensive master...and therefore much more inclined to get hit...

But to answer the question...yeah Floyd has the better defense....Hell so did cats like SRL,SweetPea,etc IMO
