Please consider their full career. Chavlao: http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=119&cat=boxer Bonavena: http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=9386&cat=boxer
Thats a good question. Chuvalo was stopped via TKO by Frazier and Foreman. Ali stopped Bonavena in the 15th round. Though, Jimmy Ellis dropped Bonavena. I think that Bonavena had the better overall skills of the two - punching power and defense. Though, for pure ability to take it I give the edge to Chuvalo. Yes, I know that Frazier stopped Chuvalo and Bonavena gave Frazier hell. But, I feel that Bonavena's power was a big factor against Frazier. Whereas, Chuvalo was not able to keep Frazier off him. Also, Chuvalo was a bit ringworn when he fought Frazier. Bonavena was still n his prime when he fought Ali & Frazier. So, I give the edge to Chuvalo. Grebfan9 www.firstroundboxing.com
BIG DEE HERE=Hate to tell this to you but George Chuvalo was in his prime when he fought Joe Frazier in 1967. Chuvalo had just gone 15 rds with Ali the year before in 1966 and still had the one punch KO of Jerry Quarry in 1969 to come.
Good question. Chin-wise I give it to Chuvalo, but when it comes to stamina and endurance it's hard to tell. Did either of them ever seem to run out of gas? Bonavena did look a bit tired towards the end of his fight with Ali, though, where as Chuvalo went out dancing with his wife after Ali had used his face as a punching bag for 15 rounds.
The Ali who fought Bonevena looked better than the Ali who fought Chavalo. Ali landed far better shots on Bonevena. In the fight between Chavalo and Bonavena, Bonavena was robbed of a knockdown. I think this one is close enough to go either way. Fair or not the best punchers Chavalo faced stopped him early. Bonevna was never stopped early, va anyone.
