Agreed. They also should have fought.

When matching their entire careers all across the board including everything that Jones did in other weight classes then yes. Jones is a much higher rated fighter and an ATG. If we just compare their careers at lightheavy however, It's a little closer and more complicated.

Jones is clearly a higher rated fighter when considering his whole career. Had D.M not lost to Gonzalez, he would have had an excellent argument to superiority over Jones at Light Heavy. However, D.M. lost a fight at home to the same Julio Gonzalez that Jones almost shut out just a few fights earlier. And, Gonzalez would lose almost every other fight against top level competition for the rest of his career. Including his very next fight against Erdei. So, I think the Gonzalez fight tells us a lot about how good D.M. really was. Good, but, not on the level of Jones. Even at Light Heavy.

Good points. Do you think Jones Light heavyweight resume is noticeably better than DM's, aside from beating a common opponent who DM lost too?

I think their resumes are very comparable. D.M. may have a few slightly better names, but, he always fought in (his adopted home of) Germany which is not exactly easy territory for outsiders to win decisions. Furthermore, although he beat Virgil Hill first, nobody before or after Jones EVER destroyed Virgil Hill like Jones did. Not even in the 15 years Hill continued to fight after Jones. And, their respective fights against Gonzalez were not that far apart, so, I do think that particular fight shows us a lot.

The timing of the Hill and Gonzalez fights worked better in Jones' favor though. Roy fought Virgil almost a full year after DM did and Hill did nothing in the interim between those fights. Jones fought Gonzalez two and a half years BEFORE DM did when Roy was prime and Gonzalez was green. By the time Gonzalez fought DM, Dariusz was washed up and Julio was coming into his own. I think timing means everything in boxing. And the fact that Jones looked better in dispatching Hill doesn't change the fact that DM was the one to officially dethrone a long reigning champ.

I am not really disagreeing with you. But, I do dispute that Gonzalez was any better when he fought DM. Gonzalez lost his very next fight, and never had a win against a top 10 opponent ever again. 2 years earlier, Jones clowned him and basically pitched a shutout.

The true shame is that Jones and DM never settled this debate in the ring. There were several years where this fight should have been made.

Gonzalez lost a decision to a former olympian who would go ubeaten for a decade and become a two divisional champion. I think its fair to say he was more seasoned against DM, though I won't get into an in depth debate about weather or not he was marginally improved. I agree with you that it was indeed a shame about Jones vs DM never coming off. Both have pointed fingers at each other over the years about one ducking the other. I did happen to read that DM and his management wanted as little to do with Don King productions as possible. Probably explains why he rarely stepped outside of Germany and was contempt to being the obscure WBO champ.
