PBF, but what he did was extraordinary. That doesn't diminish Calzaghe's truly excellent accomplishments.

Both great fighters. I fail to see why determining the better man is necessary.

But It does annoy me when people point to Floyd's risk/reward acumen as a plus. This is why he annoyed so many, including me. I look for risk-averse behavior in my investor, not in a fighter who asks for $50 for PPV fights against acceptable opponents.

Yup. in 10-15 years from now, people are going to say "God damn, I wish I could've seen that Floyd Mayweather Jr box..... and how great would it have been to see Hopkins vs Calzaghe?" the same way we talk about Sweet Pea and his fights today.

For me, of this last generation of fighters.. here is my Top 5 in terms of legacy

    1. Floyd Mayweather Jr
Why? - Undefeated, 5 weight champ, beat numerous P4P talent and kicked the ass of the only disputeable opponent he had.
    2. Roy Jones Jr
Why? - Simply because he beat Hopkins, Toney, Hill, McCallum and took himself from being an average 160lber to being the HW champ of the world.

    3. Joe Calzaghe
Why? - 46/0, Dominated a division, collecting all of the belts and being a champ at it for a decade, beat young up and comers, beat old cagey veterans, never really had a disputeable decision (Despite what idiots intimate about Reid/Hopkins) and remained dominant into his late 30s.

Also won 4 fights he wasn't supposed to win.

    4. Bernard Hopkins (could easily interchange these two)
Why? - Dominated his division for years, beat the crap out of Tito Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya and despite losing to Taylor, came back and beat Top 10 P4P talent in Winky, Tarver and Pavlik before losing to Joe.

His losses against Taylor hurt him in my view, because he wasn't able to close the show and now Taylor has shown himself to be very beatable.

    5. Oscar De La Hoya - could easily be higher, too
Multi weight champion, beat some legends in his time but his number of losses hurt him in my view, he also had some disputeable victories, such as the Pea performance.

You try get a unification match when everyone else knows you're completely unbeatable and also that sanctioning bodies actively prevent it by lumping mandatories on people.

He beat the people who mattered at 130-135.

I'd chuck in Lewis in the top five, but any of those six, in any order (bar the top two as you have them) would work for me

Kinda consider Lewis the generation before, more in line with Pernell's generation.

Edit: Although come to think of it, his best fights came in the same generation - yeah with that being said, he can go anywhere after the top two.

Remind me, how long was Gatti at 140? Also, how young was he when 126lbs?

you cant "clean out a division" without facing other title holders

usually the other belt holders matter a little bit in a division you are trying to "clean out"

hopkins cleaned out 160, calzaghe cleaned out 168

i thought it was how big the guy was "naturally when he began boxing" now its changed to "how long they been at the weight"

is there any other changes you want to make to determine the size of the fighter, now that you was proven wrong? (Gatti 5 7', 70 inch reach, began at 126lbs. 34 yrs. when they fought) (Mayweather 5'8 72 inch reach began at 130 lbs. was 27 yrs when they fought)

I don't think he could get ahead of Floyd at this point.

    But let's see:

    Dawson.

    Diaconu

    Cunningham

    Adamek.

Assuming Floyd stays retired, I think that might do it.

(If Floyd comes back and loses to Marg, Oscar, or any Welter, that would also narrow the gap.)

However, if I were Joe, I'd probably retire now.

At most, a last hurrah in Cardiff with Dawson.
