Vargas = glass-jawed ***** who barely beat a green Winky Wright. DLH = Tito got a gift decision against the Golden *****. Reid = over-hyped ***** who never beat anyone of means. Whitaker = old, coked out *****. Joppy = just some ***** whose biggest win was over an ancient Duran. Hopkins = fought a largely inferior version of this ***** compared to the one that Jones fought. :good
IMO it´s definitely Trinidad, no explanation neccesary, he fought only the best of the bests and beat most of them...
Talent-wise RJJ is another league IMO, but for the record Trinidad was better. He faced fighters like Hector Camacho, Whitaker, DLH, Joppy, Mayorga, unbeaten Reid, unbeaten Vargas, unbeaten Carr, unbeaten Campas, etc., RJJ beat Toney (who is at MW very overrated, needed the judges to win against the likes of Sosa, Tiberi, Johnson, etc.), Hopkins (who wasn´t prime at that point), Johnson, Griffin, Hill, an old McCallum at LHW (who was normally a LMW), Castro, Ruiz, etc., IMO it´s crystal-clear that Trinidad´s wins are wy more impressive...
IMO tito seems to have defeated more name fighters because of his weight. RJJ cleaned out the LH division pretty much and no name fighter from the smaller divisions wanted to go up to his weight to challenge him. he defeated elite fighters early in his career in toney and bhop. sadly, no name ever was brought up at lhw because rjj was the man through and through. unlike tito, when he was fighting at 140, stars were developing at 147, 154 and 160. tito managed to beats name guys at this weight. it is a fact that he will defeat more names because he fought in more divisions in his prime while rjj pretty much stayed at LHW save for that one fight at HW which he also won
How a person's legacy is remembered can be in the eye of the beholder. Roy was dominant and a freak of nature but he certainly did not beat the very best in the weight ranges he fought in. I mean he wasnt even technically lineal champ at lightheavy where he had his legacy building reign. Beating Ruiz is a tricky one to evaluate. At the time I thought it was a solid win against a solid champ but I leaned more towards the crowd who thought his win was overrated because it was evident that Ruiz was the weakest champ at heavy. But in hindsight Ruiz went on to forge a pretty decent career and proved he wasnt that much of joke, maybe not the pimp he claimed but a worthy champ no less. Does that reflect better on Roy's legacy?? Point Im trying to make is that the dominance that Tito showed in a single division is about as equal as the doimance that Roy showed in 2 divisions (Middle-Supermiddle). And Tito certainly had some very big wins at 154 aswell. I think its closer than many people think but in the end Roy didnt even have a close fight till he was out of his prime. Tito lost twice in his prime (DLH and Bhop).
IMO RJJR will end up within top 30 P4P greatest, when all is said and done. Tito will lucky to be even mentioned in top 60.
Roy Jones by a mile has a better legacy than Trinidad. Who did Tito beat? A shot Whitaker, the very controversial decision over De la Hoya, hmmm Joppy, Vargas and Mayorga. Jones beat Toney, Hopkins, Woods, Hill, Ruiz (at Heavyweight, while starting at Middleweight). In total, Jones beat more than 20 guys that were ranked in the Top10. Trinidad beat about 14. And Jones climbed more weight classes with success.
